I recently saw the Hoover Duros S3590 cannister vac at Costco for $129. This seems like a pretty good price.
Normally I don't like cannister vacs as much as uprights, largely becauase the uprights are easier to store and handle (in my opinion). But since I have mostly hard flooring, I think a cannister that does a good job on both rugs and hard floors might be a good choice.
Currently I have a bagless upright that cleans rugs very well, but it doesn't fit so well under tables/etc. And since the brush roll is always going it's not so great on particulate matter on hard floors (like sand). It's a Eureka Whirlwind Boss. What I do like about it is decent suction and the HEPA filtering, so it never leaves that "just been vacuumed" aroma. I also have a Bissel Butler, which is similar in shape to the Duros but with a smaller collection bag. It also has an option wand-mounted bagless attachment... which is good for catching stuff like pet hair. It's ok but it has no power nozzle and I generally don't bother using it on floors. I keep it for other uses.
The Duros seems powerful and relatively well made - with auto cord return, 12 amp motor, separate power brush motor, which can be turned off, and nice big wheels and a swivel head. The only thing I don't like is that it's a bag model, and in addition it lacks a HEPA filter. But, on the other hand, it will probably be less messy to empty periodically. And I suppose if it leave that "just been vacuumed" aroma in the home, I can always return it to Costco for a full refund.
So I'm wondering if any of the vacuum gurus around here have taken a look at the Duros and have any opinion about it.
