The voicer over's were classic's lol it swirls... it whirls.

these are great aren't they - but not a trace of an Australian accent!! I thought the 'swirls/whirls' ad showed the wash tub either with too little water or overloaded 'cos the washload appeared to stall momentarily. Surprised it got passed the producers but perhaps they don't have the same eagle eye that washer addicts have!! Plus, she must have had VERY wet feet!!

Just an opinion of thought...

Well who knows where it was recorded, maybe it was recorded generic and just states the price in different currency for different country's (aka voice over), there's always that possibility.

Though it is hard to tell, because most vintage footage's always seemed to have the same voice. The man speaking on these adverts Reminds me of the WWII... guess we'll never know the true answer lol unless the information is proven otherwise ;)

126 guineas!

To my way of thinking that was a huge sum of money. I was talking with my father tonight and they purchased that model without a heater in 1959 after seeing it displayed at the Brisbane Exhibition. He and I calculated that in todays money it would have been the equivalent of between $3500 and $5000! Remember that you could buy a new Holden for less than 1200 Pounds at the time. He thought that he was earning about 1200 Pounds a year in quite a good white collar job then.

Interestingly the first twin tubs were far more time and labour saving than the wringer washers at the time. Quicker, drier and less handling of the laundry.

That's the model my family had. I remember my mother saying how when they first married she washed by hand in a laundry tub for a few years, till she got ill and had to go to hospital, when she got home there was a new Hoovermatic in the laundry.

That accent sounds rather British to me, but Aussie accents were not valued at the time, professional announcers were selected for sounding polished, ie:British.

Gizmo has perfectly captured what I was trying to say

That is what TV and radio presenters sounded like over here, it demonstrated the quality of the program/product. I'm assuming the working class in the UK rarely were on TV to tout products back in the early 60's?

Peter, I wasnt saying the machine was cheap, I was saying that any house that could afford a fitted laundry that looked like that, probably could afford an Auto. The house I grew up in was built in 63 and it had a full fitted laundry including auto washer hookups, a drying cupboard, two built in storage cupboards and a double built in laundry tub. Houses I've lived in since that were built in the 40's-70's era have had laundries that were tacked on as an after thought or as an adaption to the wash house. The Malleys Automatic 12, was 171 Guineas in 1956 or 142 for the Semi-Auto, thats not that much more expensive, only 9 Guineas extra for a single tub machine that has a heater and doesnt require you to get your hands wet.

I dearly love twintubs. But then I'm a laundromaniac. I'd like nothing better than standing there the whole time orchestrating it. I can see the practical brick wall though, trying to sell these for almost the same as a full auto to a woman who just wants laundry 'done'. Unless they absolutely needed the portability.
