Horrors, Memories of High School Typing Class

Girls now we are going to do a professional letter:
Modified semi-block, set your tabs 5 spaces, ....

Four years of typing tests on beige IBM Selectric typewriters, if one was lucky and scheduled properly "Steno" was in the same class next period so one didn't have to move about.

Favourite movie with typing" "Best of Everything" with Suzy Parker, Hope Lange, Louis Jordan and who can forget Joan Crawford. All that gorgeous late 1950's early 1960's NYC scenery.

Today's young girls have no idea how lucky they are, with all the employment options available. Back then it was the typing/steno pool, nursing, teaching, and assorted "pink ghetto" professions that paid little and got even less respect. Of course one wasn't supposed to stay at these positions long, they were merely rest stops onto a young woman's true "vocation" marriage and children. Every other week there would be a pool and or party for the "lucky" girl who was leaving because of marriage, while the rest could only sit around and wait for their "prince to come". Guess compared to the mind numbing conditons of some pink ghetto jobs, a house, husband and three children in the surburbs seemed like heaven.

Of course "work" wasn't all just that, a smart girl was supposed to turn her job into a husband hunt, which many did quite well. Doctors married nurses, bosses married their secretaries, pilots married airline hostesses, airline hostesses married any number of sucessful men they waited on during flights.

For those pool souls whom started pushing her late twenties and early thirties with no prospects in sight, she might rise up to a supervisor position, a post that held a tad more respect, but not much more lolly.

Sexual harrasment was common and there was not much a girl could do about it. A girl's reputation was perhaps the best defense agianst a male co-worker with hand problems. Nice girls, who were "saving themselves" soon were'nt bothered with in favour of those girls that were up for a good time. Abortion of course was illegal, so those girls were taking a huge chance. If they were lucky, the father of the child was a connected and powerful man whom could "fix things". Luckier still would be the man whom offered marriage and refuge. For the unlucky girls, the stories are just too horrible.
