Feeling particularly foolhardy today. Drove an insane distance to pick up this machine (see picture), some of the UK chaps on here probably saw this on ebay and turned it down. There is a lot of work there! Will have to get quite 'creative' with the exterior, but the inside doesn't look at all bad. I will try to post updates when i ever actually get to work on it, does anyone have any useful hints, tips, knowledge or a spare case that hasn't got the tinworm so bad?
Please no negativity, it's definitely not the biggest project I have embarked upon!

Hello !

I was tempted as it wasn't that far from me in fact I was in Northallerton on Friday. There's loads of people here who have rebuilt these and may have spares

I'm sure they will pop up and help !! I'm not too mechanical with these but they are great machines

Second: JBWeld is your friend for the serious damage, the more minor stuff, well you'd want to sand her down and start fresh, anyway, right?

Uploaded a few pics of the tub, what is the basket filled with fluff atop the agitator supposed to do?

Well done on getting this and glad its got its original drain hose and its one of the few models produced with the ring to fit the filter tray. If I am right it dates from February 1977 and is the 05 version - I have the later 10 version. It looks like its in pretty good condition internally considering the externals but I am sure you will get it sorted out.

There is lots of great info on here and I have attached the link to another member's machine which went through quite a transformation so its perfectly possible.

Have you powered it up yet? The main issue will be either the seals and/or the pump which are both prone to leaking. The other issue to check will be the clutch under the bottom of the motor. You just need to check that it is all free moving.

Good luck with it and be sure to post plenty of pictures of the work. If you get stuck, just ask as there is a fair bit of experience amongst us all.

Here's something someone in the UK can better answer than me, but didn't Hotpoint use that sheet metal for several years? You might find a machine which was built later and is hopeless yet has quite decent metal?

Just a thought - I'm looking forward to the project and your journey. Especially all the things you try and why they work or don't.

Why, yes - I do have an equally rusty/scratched/dented vintage machine coming up in a bit, how ever did you guess?

Apparently so! I'm no expert though. Haven't seen a hotpoint top loader for sale in a while though, in any kind of order (other than the one I just got!) What's yours?

We normally don't have a rust problem in this area - our relative humidity is super low, we have constant wind, no salt and very little precipitation.

But, if you try hard enough, you can rust anything to death. And somebody tried really hard - or, this was brought here in this condition.

Anyway, it's been on the back burner for seven years while we look for trim parts. Somebody took out all the panels and knobs....I suspect it may have been a parts donor.

Anyway, if we ever find sheet metal (even not in pink, sigh), that's the way I'd go on this one.

Had a play

I got it plugged in outside, it tried to fill but the water was coming in slower than it was leaving, the drain hose is badly perished and the main tub seals are gone. I filled it with a hose and skipped through the cycle, all I could get out of it was it running the pump to circulate the water, am I doing something wrong haha? Anyway lots of work needs doimg!
