Hotpoint 1600/1830

Hi all,

Hotpoint replied last week and there are no 1600/1830's at HQ. They said they would look out though and one suggested looking in the training room and I have asked them but they won't reply. Would it be better to ring them? However I am launching a nationwide search in my country for one as these were definately sold here as a fellow member verified. It may be more possible to find one over here as the older generation tend to hold on to old things like these. I know what I'm doing is a stab in the dark but I really want a rare machine. Weren't Keymatic's very hard to come by until recently? Hopefully this is the case with our Holy Grail.

Your right about older people hanging on to things, items do turn up, in a way it is best to place adverts etc and then forget about them.

I have had a wanted add in my local papers for ab out 3 years and so far I have gotten two machines from this advert so it does work.

But Patience is the key to all this collecting

I admire your enthusiasm and drive so lets hope it gets you what you want.

Yes I have to learn patience is the key to success in this hobby. My first ad is in the local free ad's paper and this will cover Co. Donegal and Derry. I'm spending the next few days to advertise in further papers and the internet to make this a nationwide search. Belfast would be a good place to find one with all those old abandoned houses so I will concentrate on this area and Derry. I'm going to the dumps there on Saturday hopefully but I don't expect to find one there. I don't think we should give up just because we haven't found one in 30 yrs, it kills our hopes but hearing all this is what motivates me.

I have a nice shed now which is all plumped in and electrified as you can see. There is a fair amount of space it's just not completely noticable due to the dark atmosphere. The 1980's Servis Extraspin 5030 is filling in for the Hoover Spinarinse yet to be found.

very rare,good choice

Hi all,first ever post but been lurking for a long time,so finaly plucked up courage.Good choice, as i think the Hotpoint 1600 was the best looking front load washer Hotpoint ever prodced.It spoilt the look a little being all white on the facelift version 1830.Being an appliance engineer for many years now i have worked on these models in the distant past.They are probably rare to find as they had reliability issues.It was the first Hotpoint to use electronic motor speed control ,so had not realy been perfected ,although i think a similar system had been used on the English Electric reversomat solid state.A fellow member of this site who i met recently ,Matchboxpaul asked for info on the 1600 so i sent him a rambling email on the subject and with some info from another engineer he edited it .So Matchboxpaul if you read this it might be of intrest if you could post it.And James good luck with your search.

Yes I have heard that Paul was researching on this wonderful machine and he has told me that the info will be posted by Xmas. Lucky you getting to engineer on them, you were touching goldust! Apparently none have been seen in the last 25 years so I can imagine they had problems, for example the suspension must have been dodgey as it was the first 1100 rpm FL in the UK or even the world. Hotpoint then went back to 750rpm until the Liberator De Luxe which went back to 1000 rpm when the suspension design was satisfactory. I was hoping to find one here in Ireland and I'd hate to think negatively that they are all gone. I wouldn't mind having a chat with you on e-mail about this machine too if you wouldn't mind e-mailing my address on my profile.

Hi all,looking back the Hotpoint 1600 probably wasnt that bad when compared to whats about now,at least they were repairable.You mention the suspension,the 1600 had good strong suspension and wasnt a problem at all.The tub was supported from the base by 4 coil springs ,1 at each corner so didnt suffer from twisting as happened on later 2 post suspension machines.Looking back they were a very stable smooth running machine on that score.James,i will try and find your email adddress and look forward to having a chat.I found these in my garage bit of a coincidence.Regards Nige.

Hi Nige,

I would imagine it was far better than today's rebadged Indesits. Our last machine was a WMA34 and it banged and knocked from day one for 7 years until there was a roar that was heard throughout the house, the machine was performing final spin with it's drum on the the baseplate!!! Luckily it didn't reach anywhere near 1000 rpm. Now we have an ok for now WML540. Nothing compares to our old 9537. What a coincidence is right, even though my Servis is filling in for a Spinarinse to be found. Your Twosome Tub is the 70's model while mine is dating from 1968. You have the next machine up too, with the manual wringer. Why did you get rid of the 1830? I hope one can be found here.

Welcome to the forums and lovely to see a pic of your pristine 3104E single tub again.

Still makes me smile when I remember that the ribbon around the rollers even has Hoover written on it! When manufacturers took pride in the details.

The Microtronic was temporarily fitted with sidestrips the other day! Coming on slowly but surely.

The Bendix I bought off you is lovely, though still havent had an opportunity to plumb, plug and play with it yet. It sits in good company, as shown in the piccy below.

Honest to god, the information you supplied on the Hotpoint 1600/1830 is totally invaluable! James - if you want to learn about these two machines, then you are chinwagging to the right person in Nige!

I am waiting on feedback from one other person with experience of these two machines, before I will post the document (with your permission Nige) onto the forum.

I have located the exploded diagrams and spare parts listings for the 1600 machines that I have and, when I get a moment, I will photograph and post them here. If I can get the scanner working, I will scan them for a better quality.

Hi all,

Can't wait to see those diagrams, my guess is that the motor is at the bottom? I have more ad's up now for this machine on an Irish site called Buy & Sell with a piccy on it. It's proving very popular, 7 views since Sunday. It will also be published in their paper in the North so this might enhance our chances. I'm also looking to give my 1321A a coat of gloss paint as the spray paint was matt and I thought it would do but you dont get a shine off it and it gets grubby so I might pop to Halfords. Glad to hear that lovely Microtronic is coming along. Wouldn't mind finding the X2000 1000 spin model, in almond!

Good to hear your posting to the club, I am curious to know what the machine is in the garage (to the right of the pic) with the single tub & spin..it looks like the base to a Thor Automagic..?
