Hotpoint Custom Trend wiring woes

Howdy!
Woe is me. I may want to use my pank Custom Trend but have some issues.
When I bought it a few years ago it was working according to the prior owner. No reason to not believe him.
However, forensic examination reveals a not-so-optimal repair. It appears that for some reason the wiring in the range was cut and spliced back together.
Any idea why?
The prior owner gave me a repair receipt from GE Service where, in 1996, they replaced all surface elements. I have no way of knowing if they did this wiring “repair” or someone else.
If I were to redo this wiring, what would be recommended wiring and materials to purchase?
Additionally, I wish to add a cord. What is your suggested modern cord to use? I will have an electrician install the mating receptacle.

The one John has in Beltsville is the absolute best baking oven in that entire kitchen, Kevin and I loved it when we cooked for the wash in.

I'd bet all the wiring got cut so that the box holding the 4 surface units could be removed.  This may have happened when the unit was removed from it's original installation.  That's what  happened to the oven control box from my Wonder Kitchen... I rewired the whole thing with high-heat wires that I found at Home Depot (the kind with a fireproof fabric insulation).

Hi Paul, the wiring looks fine to me. it looks like they replaced the wiring to the surface elements when they changed the elements, hook it up and test.

 

I fuse all my vintage ranges to 30 amps which will provide plenty of capacity unless you want to have all four burners on hi while using the oven, a 30 amp circuit provides a much greater margin of safety if something shorts.

 

I normally use a 3 wire dryer cord, but a four wire cord can be used if the electrician insists, but a properly wired 3 wire cord is just as safe and probably safer. [ the problem with a 4 wire cord is you have no way of knowing if the ground is actually good, with a 3 wire cord if you lose the neutral-ground the appliance will immediately stop working correctly, however the case of the appliance will become electrically live, so both types of hook-ups can have potential problems ]
