hi everyone my mums old empress has stood in the garage for the last 30 years undisturbed wrapped up in an old tent of all things its in exellent condition its a white one without the heater not sure of its age but i have found a date on the motor [aug 1959] when swiched on it runs perfectly if it wasnt for the steady hum of the motor you would hardly know it was on however there appears to be an oil leak not much but i would like to stop it so what i really want to know is how to get the centre nut off the agitator post so i can get the tub off and deal with the oil leak its been soaked in wd40 and left for a fiew days i just want to know whats the best tool to use really .My mum looked after this machine after the washing was finished she would dry it out wipe down the cabinet and then put an old sheet between the rollers she said it was to stop them sticking together cheers Anthony

hi again guys i managed to get the nut off with a chain spanner then removed the gearbox and tightend up all the screws holding the two halves together filled up with new oil and left it on the floor in the shed for a fiew days while i clean up the cabinet so far so good no leaks next i turned my atention to the seized pump lots of wd40 soon got that moving however it leaks water is b[passing along the impelor shaft spraying onto the rubber drive wheel causing it to loose its grip is it possible to fix this or will it need a new pump i have thought about fitting a modern electric pump from an old auto using the machines on of switch to control it leaving the motor to be controlled by the switch on the socket but i would like to keep it origional if possible i know its probably impossible trying to find a new pump for this machine so if anyone has any repair tips im all ears cheers Anthony

Hi, good luck with your restoration, I no nothing about the empress machines, but cant see any problems the fitting a modern electric pump, place the switch for it in a concealed position.

Don't give up hope yet!
There are pumps lurking about but just not where you think you'd find them. A member here might have one. The Countess has the same pump and I think the first Hotpoint Supermatic shares the same pump too.

Not like any Hoover I ever saw, unless its some sort of modified Connie. U got at better picture of it? By the way the cleaner in the foreground is a Lux 60 - this style was BOL from 1951 as the 48 (terracotta body) and the as the 60 above from 1957 till about 1961

I know it's difficult to wait for parts when you are trying to get a machine back in working condition but the empress is one of he easier to find washers on eBay and they can go quiet cheaply , so it might just be worth the wait to buy another washer to use the pump of the replacement.
Depends of course on the cost of an electric pump.
Maybe not the perfect solution but just a thought.

I think its a very small spin dryer, the sort that would fit on a draining board and gravity drain into the sink. I'm sure I remember seeing it when I went to amberly some years ago. I also remember haveing thoughts of running a hose into the bowl like lid, alowing the water to dribbling through the holes to give a hotpoint style spray rinse.
Or it's small enough to be an early electric potatoe peeler, ( watch you don't get concused at the ideal home exhibiton and end up hospitalised lol).
But back to the pump, yes i think everything is driven direct from the gearbox, making it more difficult to retro fit other mechanical pumps that were belt or friction driven. I think at least as a tempory measure fitting an electric pump will have the machine in working order in the short term. If you can get the pump apart and strip the pump down, can you remake a crude seal with a couple of rubber O rings, I had a degree of success with this on the 1400 supermatic only to then find the rubber inpellor perished off the shaft, so one problem was solved only for it to be plagued by another.
but what ever your solution, so long as the waters pumping and you can enjoy a good wash, then in my opinion thats the main aim. All the best, look forward to seeing the results.

Its a "Saturn" 1960`s Spin Dryer, notice the spout lower bottom, its as Mathew said designed for the sink top draining board..

hi everyone first of all thanks for all the usefull and interesting comments i love all those vintage apps in the picture thinga were so stylish then even though they were everyday objects .Ihave spent today pulling the empress pump apart and i think i may have managed to fix it by canibalizingthe rubber seal from an old pump that i have just replaced on my hoovermatic 5090 after taking out both impellors and removing the fixed washer underneath i carefully prized the seal out and prayed that it would fit the hotpoint pump it fitted perfectly then simply reasemble i then blocked up the intake apeture with the finger of an old marigold and filled it with water i turned the impellor a fiew times guess what no leaks so its been on the bench all afternoon still no leaks tomorow i will refit the pump and give it a run if its ok i am going to fit a short length of hose to the pump drain cock then run it out through the hole in the back of the machine where the plug is i will now be able to drain all the water from the pump after using the machine . all the Hotpoint machines that empty by fitting a tube to the spout in the tub must have had the same problem of pump corosion because the pump and the hose up to the wash tub are always full of water i have often thought even with the hoover twintub if only bthe hose came through the cabinet lower down you would be able to drain all the water from the pump hence less corosion photos coming soon

hi guys refitted the pump yesterday and then put just a bucket of water it rums perfectly with no leaks im now preparing the cabinet for a respray i have already started to spray the wringer it looks like new here are a fiew photos to be going on with the first one is the old pump from the hoovermatic and the worn out seal from the Hotpoint

Cant wait to show pics of the machine to my mum, whose parents had an Empress for many years, through to about 1978, when it was replaced by an Electra A3E02 front loader.
Love the Hoovermatic cupboard too - always nice to see old machines accommodated in new kitchen environments. Is your Hoovermatic a T5088 or a T5090 de luxe?
If its a T5088, then it is a rare machine and yours would be the only one I know of in preservation.

hi Paul the Hoovermatic is a 5090 so not that special but the Empress well thats a diffrent story my mum had it from new i remember as a small boy being sat on the draining board so i could see what was going on in the machine and later getting a belt from my mum for putting a banana through the wringer . This machine did our family washing [six of us ]for nigh on 30 years so it deserves a facelift my mum would be delighted if she was here i will post more photos as the work goes on . we do have an automatic [a Candy grand o with a nine kg load and i have to say its brilliant it just gobbles up washing with exellent results but every so often we get out the Hoover just for the fun of it regards Anthony

Good work there Anthoney, those pumps can be so fragile, I broke mine trying to get it off the twinny, one sharp turn and crack...whilst repairing another 1400 we gave up on it as the impellar wouldnt turn enough to feed the Filter Flow and resorted to fitting a new electric one!!
Make sure you check the hoses and if in doubt replace them, you dont want a tub of steamy water flooding your nice new kitchen!!! heres a pic of the early 1400 twinny with the cast pump housing, after a good clean up and new hoses its good to go for another 50yrs...LOl
