The renovations of my historic house are continuing. I have reached the point where I say "That which does not kill me can only scar and maim me for life."

I was given a 1952-ish white Chambers 90C for the price of FREE! I just have to remove it from a 2nd floor kitchen, get it down a very nasty stairwell, and transport it across town. Don't worry, I've hired professional movers, I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid. I just went over to prep it for the move by removing as many parts as I could to lighten the load and reduce the risk of things falling off and getting lost or damaged. I think I lightened the load by about 150 pounds.

My problem is that I cannot figure out how to remove the high back, and I need to remove it so the movers can get it down the stairwell. I know it comes off, but I cannot figure out how to access the hardware. I found a copy of the installation instructions online and just can't quite make heads or tails of it. There is an insulating panel behind the back consisting of 2 pieces of stamped sheet-steel with fiberglass insulation in between (no,it's not asbestos). This panel is held together with a screw and speednut at each corner and in the middle at the top and bottom. There was a screw at the bottom holding this panel in place, but there is something holding it at the top that I cannot figure out. If I remove this insulating panel, I can access the hardware that attaches the high back to the top of the stove and remove it for safe transporting.

Please help!

The high back comes off right above the stove top.  I believe that there are 8 nuts and bolts that hold it on.  It likely dirty in that area.

Good luck!

The bolts.

I can sort of see the hardware that holds the back to the cooktop, but I cannot get to it because there is an insulating panel in the way. There are six screws that hold the insulation panel together (insulation between sheet metal). There was one screw in the bottom of the insulating panel which held it to the stove, but I am trying to determine what holds the insulating panel in place at the top.

Dave,

I had a 90C. I don't remember exactly. I do remember the oven vent panel at the back of the oven. All of the screws that I removed for those panels had their heads visable and toward the rear. I remember the insulation and throwing it away.

If you can't make sense of this, register on the Chambers website and ask there.

Chambers documentation...

No longer have a 90-C, but still have Chambers 90-C Service Manual and the Chambers "Idle Hour Cook Book" (operation & cooking) that are a great resource that will help you get most out of your Chambers, both are in perfect new condition, that I'd sell for 1/2 of the asking price they get on the Chambers Website (that's where I got them from)... you can eMail me offline: firesweep "at" verizon "dot" net if interested.

Very busy night.

I was able to register on the Chambers site and browsed the information. I think I've figured out how to attack the stove. Thanks for the tips everyone!

Boy, have I got my work cut out for me on this one!

Dave,

Some "work in progress" pics would be nice when you have time. (yeah right
