(Reuters) - Large tornadoes hit rural areas of northeastern Nebraska on Monday afternoon, with reports of property damage, according to forecasters and the Weather Channel.

"We do have a tornadic thunderstorm in northeast Nebraska moving toward the Iowa border," said forecaster Bill Bunting of the National Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma. He said the center had received reports of "large tornadoes" in the area.

"It's obviously a very dangerous situation in those areas," Bunting said.

The Weather Channel showed video images on Monday afternoon of two tornadoes appearing in the same rural area around Stanton County, Nebraska. The channel said it was receiving reports of property damage from the storms.

Bunting said there were also severe thunderstorms moving across southern Minnesota, northern Iowa and western Illinois. The situation will persist into the evening hours and potentially overnight, Bunting said, with storms moving into northwest Illinois and Wisconsin.

A representative for the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency did not have any immediate damage reports, but said it was watching for them from the affected area.

Well the line is in Iowa now, It runs from Ames, IA north to about Rochester and moving east. It's north of Des Moines and I think they are in the clear with this storm. Marshalltown, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids and Dubuque are now in its path.
Mason City should start seeing rain in the next few minutes.

Looks like Waterloo is in the path now. Take cover! Lots of warnings out there! [this post was last edited: 6/16/2014-19:54]

Yeah, Lots of Warnings!

Our local weather people here in Waterloo are BABBLING. They are issuing warnings so thick and fast for so many areas that you cannot make head nor tail of what they are saying.

I wish a doctor would run over to the TV stations with some Ritalin. The guys on Channel 9 are enough to make Richard Simmons look calm.

Well....

When all was said and done, it wasn't too bad here in Waterloo. A couple of branches came off my neighbors' hickory tree and landed in my driveway, but that was it for damage on this street, pretty much. There will be a lot of leaves and twigs to get up tomorrow when I'm off.

And the power stayed on - one of the many nice things about living in the Midwest. I've been through many a similar storm in Georgia, in the area served by Georgia Power, and having the power flicker off and on was the norm during this kind of weather. I've lost air conditioners and fridges to the problem, because refrigeration equipment can't take that kind of thing.

Not a ripple in the power here. Basement's dry, too, which makes me glad I spent some time on gutters and downspouts recently.
