This was my Grandads cousins recipe. She lived in Catawba NC until her death in the late 80s. This cake was baked in her wood cook stove I remember visiting there as a small child I'm posting this just as my Grandmother wrote it back in the 50s or 60 s

I'll have to ask my Mother, I'm certain they would have known my family members because the Abernathy's were big in Catawba Baptist. One of my late Grandmothers brothers (Grady) ran the barber shop and tax office along with his wife Oneita. Today his daughter has kept the tax office going after they passed. Uncle Jake was one of the town officials and they all were big at the Masonic Lodge. My Grandmother and all her siblings were raised in that church.

Well thats interesting!!

They lived in a old white stucco house with a circle drive ,fairly close to where Rock Barn road comes into 70 I think that was the road, I was by there back in the summer and it looks the same.

I love a good fruit cake, not the kind you find at the 99 Cent Store that have a 10-year shelf life. The photo of your finished cake looks spectacular, not only the decorated top but the sides too. It's baked perfectly. Just makes you want to pick it up and take a bite out of it!

Hans -

That fruitcake looks wonderful! If I have the time, I'd love to try Lil's recipe! My mom and grandma always made fruitcake the weekend after Thanksgiving. After they cooled - one recipe made for loaf-sized cakes - they would soak cheesecloth in rum or brandy and then wrap it around the cakes. They would get covered in wax paper and foil, put into a metal tin, and then inside the front hall closet where it was always cold. They would sit there until Christmas Eve and then out they came. Sliced and served with piping hot coffee. Oh, so good!

Thanks for sharing this recipe!!
