That sounds reasonable and explains the 120/240 thing and opening enough to smell gas but not enough to light (sticky valve).
A 60Hz coil should have slightly more pull running on 50, the impedance goes down and current goes up. However, heat also goes up and temp rise is an important design parameter for solenoids.
Do what the tech says. He's had his hands on them. I have only worked on 1 (mine) and without the Hz controversy. I know just enough theory to be dangerous and the math to flesh it out is over my head even if I had all the numbers.
