Back in my childhood: Remember a Pinocchio marionette falling into a floor lamp w/ a hot bulb that instantly melted, probably even more ready to start a fire in the lamp and it didn't help that the string was tangled up in the bulb and around the socket and fittings for the shade...

But I managed to get the puppet off of the light bulb and completely out of the lamp, and its body around the torso was all that suffered any damage...

So, here, then--more than thirty-years-later: I wake up thinking it was my wife's heating pad, left on and heating up all the debris on the bedroom floor...

Instead, going into my daughter's room was this! And somehow, I don't think Barbie is ever going to let go of that bulb!

(On the floor, was the other melted arm, extended from the heat...)

Don't even know how long that lamp had even been on for, and I hate to waste a still-working bulb...  (And yes, Laura got scolded by me, for the act...!)

like father...like daughter

Wow..so glad your nose led you..my grandson tried to unscrew the bulb from a lamp once only once he had a rather nasty burn and will never do it again however I removed the table lamp from his room so now he has to use the ceiling light..lol. Glad you smelled this Cheryl

Scary!  Barbie does not look good after that heat treatment...  A keen nose is a good thing to have.

It May Be Time For safer Light Bulbs In Your Home

Incandescent light bulbs cause thousands of home fires every year, in addition to wasting huge amounts of energy.

Glad you smelled it before it caused a fire. I have a customer in NW Washington DC that had a attic light bulb that cause a fire and badly fire damaged her home and the homes on both sides of hers, all while they slept. Total damage over a million dollars.

Wow, scary. Glad everyone - except Barbie - is ok.

Yes, switch to LED. They are cheap enough now, cheap protection in a kids room. Last week I picked up 100 watt eq. Bulbs for $10, 60 eq are $4.

I remember back in the '60s a family event was happening at my Aunt Theresa's in her dining/family room and people noticed a smell.  The source was visually obvious.  One of the cone-shaped white plastic shades on a pole lamp by a big, reclining easy chair with vibrator was melting and making its way towards the floor.

In true Aunt Theresa style, she put on a dramatic display of disgust combined with embarrassment.  She was a textbook example of a prima donna.

I love the Barbie pix.  I think #3 would be right at home at the Institute for Contemporary Art downtown!

I really can't save the bulb, nor the doll...  As I was about to put all that in a lamp w/ a cord-dimmer switch, I noticed a crack in the bulb (And it was really the LIGHT BULB that I was trying to save, applying the right amount of heat, via the cord-dimmer switch in another lamp, while prying Barbie right off of it)...

I'll look into safer bulb options...  Like I said, a lamp that was actually on, was where this had occurred, years ago, and pulled Pinocchio out at the right time (for the record, I think it was his feet and maybe lower legs that melted--trying to vividly recall what happened there, amid my dramatic elaboration (but not entirely exaggeration) of the past incident), that I'm reminded of, and this is actually after finding the doll put in that lamp, a couple, or more times, at least,--Thank God!--when it was turned off...!

And Laura acting like she didn't care, even admitting that she wouldn't mind me throwing her doll away, not helping......

Wow! Barbie melts; who knew? Very trippy photos.

I'm with John on this one: Get rid of incandescent bulbs.

I remember evacuating our dorm in college after a girl threw a damp towel over a lamp shade, then fell asleep. One of the few things I remember about the late '70s, LOL.

Both funny and scary!

Glad you were able to catch it before a fire.

Remember those crazy rings of cloth that you would put designer oil on and place it on the bulb?  It would then warm up and cause the room to have a designer fragrance.  Wonder how many of those caused fires when they dried out and the owner forgot about them.  I think the later design was a metal ring that you would fill with the oil.
