Hello:

If anyone knows the answer to this question, this group does!

I'm in need of some IBM Beige (a.k.a. "computer beige") spray paint. This is that very light grey-beige colour that most computers are painted. Searching online hasn't brought up much in the way of results.

Does anyone know a source for this?

Oh, I hate computer beige . . .

but I would recommend trying a car parts store like Pep Boys and checking out their display of aerosol touch-up paint. Most cars have metallic paint these days, but pretty much all manufacturers have had a basic non-metallic beige or light almond/cream color from time to time. The spray cans will have a colored top that roughly matches the paint color; you might need to buy a couple to see which one is the best match for what you're doing. The advantage of using the car paint is that it is high quality, available in the smaller cans, and there is a good selection to choose from. I suspect your search turned up nothing because there is probably no standard beige color throughout the computer industry, but rather a lot of very similar colors that are close enough to look OK together. I seem to recall that computers tended to be a lot more beige in color in the early '90s, then got whiter until the change to black around 2000.

Are you talking about IBM Mainframe Beige, or PC Beige?

Beige was an available color for your System 370 mainframe and perephials back in the 70's.

You wouldn't by chance be hoarding a 3205 Card Reader/Punch, now would you?

Most paint stores have a color match computer. Take a piece of your computer down there and have it matched. I think Pep Boys may even have a color match service and they will put your custom color in a spray can for you. But this service may be limited only to the larger stores.

Hi Whirlcool:

Nah, what I've actually got is an older (1963 or so) Electrolux Model L. It's paint needs to be redone. The factory finish is SOOOO close to IBM Beige, I cannot tell you, with turquoise bumpers, wheels, and handle. So, if I could find IBM Beige in spray cans, I'd be sitting pretty, with no need to spend beaucoup bucks on custom paint-matching.

So, that's the reason for the request, not any great love for IBM Beige, and nothing to do with computers.

I think they used to (maybe they still do) refer to that computer equipment color as "putty" if that helps any in your search.
