A few months ago we were discussing the various ice cube shapes that different brands of ice machines made. It seemed that the cylindrical and the half crescent shapes were the most common. And each also had it's own set of problems for the end user.

It seemed some cubes like to stick to the side of the glass, and when you go to take a drink the ice cube swirls around and blocks the beverage from getting into you mouth at a rate above a trickle. Then as the ice melts it waters down the drink too.

I have found a solution! Mini ice cubes. I wanted a separate ice tray because our water here is super chlorinated, and I wanted to make my own ice using spring water.

So I found this set of mini ice cube trays. Two trays come in each package. These mini ice cubes have remarkable capabilities. First, they don't clump. Not even sitting in a bowl in the freezer nor in your drink. Secondly, they cool down your drink very, very quickly. In less than a minute, your beverage is at a very cold drinking temperature. Since they don't clump, they won't interfere with your drinking of your favorite beverage. The liquid flows easily through them. I have also noted that the cubes don't melt as quickly as a large ice cube would, diluting your drink. And the price is right too. I just thought I'd pass this on.

I remember having a couple of trays like that when I was younger- I believe my grandmother bought them for me so I could have kid-sized cubes. I forgot all about them until your post! I did like them!

Mini Ice Cubes

If I recall correctly, Magic Chef used an icemaker that made similar shaped cubes.

I bought an '80s Emerson 3.5 cf mini fridge off CL a year or so ago.  It came with a similar tray for mini ice cubes.  I think after reading the OP, I'll fill it and stick it in the Combination's freezer.

 

I use the crushed ice option on our fridge's dispenser.  I can't stand the way crescents tend to position themselves so as to create a dam.  I even bought square Old Fashion glasses to cope with this issue before we had a fridge with the crushed option.

 

One thing everybody should steer clear of is those packs of soapstone cubes that claim to be a substitute for ice and that they won't dilute your cocktail.  Yeah, they don't dilute it, but they also don't cool it down worth a dam either.

I buy it in 8-lb. bags at the grocery store and use quite a bit for iced tea, in which a glass is filled with ice and brewed with a Keurig. At any rate, this looks like an inexpensive alternative. Where did you find the mini cube trays, Allen?

I found them on Ebay. I paid $2.50 for a pair of trays and $3.00 shipping. The auction was marked for 1 tray only, but when I opened the package 2 trays were in there. For some reason the price seems to have gone up a bit since I ordered mine in mid December.

I'm not one to use ice in beverages as I prefer them room temperature, unless I'm making an occasional cocktail or a frozen protein shake.

However I do own 2 ice cube trays, I have the Tupperware Fresh N Pure trays, they stack nicely, I like that the seal prevents spilling during transfer to freezer, as well as keeps them fresh. As I make the ice I promptly empty the trays into a Tupoerware Modular Mates Rectangle 2 container which holds 5 trays of ice to keep on the ready in addition to the 2 trays for if company comes.

I like that the trays as well as the storage container keep the ice from picking up off flavored from the freezer
