I can actually remember when the Inglis factory was underneath it, long before the condo's took over, but still loved seeing the sign while sitting in traffic on the Gardiner...
I thought it had been there longer than 1975. It's been about 3 yrs since I was last in Toronto for a weekend, the nightmarish traffic puts me off going and the cost of the train from here is (180 miles) is outrageous.. $207 return, no way then add in the cost of accommodation.. no thanks.
Years ago, there was a big Inglis neon sign on the Metropolitain Expressway in Montreal, around the Papineau/St-Denis exit. It was originally bilingual, but was changed to French-only in about 1977. I remember it would list the major appliances made by Inglis: Ranges, Refrigerators, Washers, Dryers and finally Dishwashers. I'd love to know whatever happened to that one!
It also appears that the Inglis brand has been retired altogether by Whirlpool. They no longer list any models of appliances on their website and I haven't seen anything branded Inglis in any store for at least a year.
I understand that Whirlpool has likely acquired way too many brand labels through acquisitions over the years and probably needs to simplify. However, the Inglis name has such history and recognition in Canada I'm surprised it was axed.
