Hey Automaticwasher people,
I'm going out on a major limb here. I am a sedentary bearcub, and I'm about to do the action adventure of a lifetime. I will be riding in AIDS/LifeCycle 9. This June I will be bicycling 545 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles. It will take me seven days, and to do it I need your help.
This ride is a fundraiser for HIV/AIDS services. My participation in the AIDS/Lifecycle helps pay for services provided by the Jeffrey Goodman Special Care Clinic in LA. Every year, the clinic provides HIV prevention, testing, and treatment to tens of thousands of people at risk of contracting HIV. These services are available to all regardless of sexual orientation.
There is an imminent need for the money I can raise. As we all know, the economy is down. State and federal budget cuts are affecting many. With layoffs and bankruptcies, more and more people have lost health insurance. This situation threatens the health and lives of people living with HIV because as more people need the clinic's services, there is less funding for them. Withholding services to the needy due to lack of funding is tragic. So I must do something about this.
To avert this potential tragedy, I am committing myself to raise $4,000. This will provide HIV medicines for one person for approximately three months. Together we can accomplish this. To kick off my fundraising, I have made myself a donation of $150. I invite you to match that. Other donation amounts, higher and lower than $150, are available as well; and all donations will make a difference. Donations are tax-deductible, and you can use your credit card and be billed in increments of $25 a month.
I am really excited to be doing this ride. I met people last year who did AIDS/Lifecycle 8, and their enthusiasm was contagious. During the kickoff ride the support for new riders was amazing. I met people of all walks of life and persuasions, all united in one cause. Before I knew it, I'd bought a bike and ridden it to places I'd never even heard of. While I was in college, I was in the university choir. A great joy from that was being a contributing part to something greater than myself. The AIDS/LifeCycle is the first thing since that has had the same feel.

Thank you so much for your support and encouragement.
