Last week we watched one of Kevin 313’s  “Cavalcade of Food” You Tube videos about making Pineapple Jello Slices.  On the small two burner electric cooktop he uses for demonstrations he had a beautiful Farberware MCM Tea Kettle.

David and I both instantly loved the design and I decided that nothing else would do but to acquire one like it.  So I set about an ebay search, found a beautiful one that was an auction sale, or make best offer.  The starting bid was $19.95.  I just had to have it, so I checked out the completed/sold listings for what would be a fair offer and offered $25.00.  Within 10 mins the offer was accepted.

It arrived today and is beautiful.  Looks very nice on the stove.

Thanks Kevin for the great video and the idea to get this lovely piece of Modern Living history.

Eddie, that's just like the one I have. It is something that belonged to my neighbor Edith, and I got it for a couple dollars when her family had a yard sale after her passing. It was heavily encrusted from hard water, but vinegar and a scrub pad took care of all that. I know you'll enjoy yours.

Saw that in Kevin's "kitchen".  Have the same one sitting on my basement range, the Frigidaire CI.  Got it many years ago after if I recall my mother melted the previous kettle on one of the burners on the range, might have been the speed heat.  Always fun to see stuff I have in others homes.

I had considered this Farberware kettle when I was in the market several years ago.  Having a gas stove, I thought the design of the handle would keep it cooler than other styles over a gas flame, and it also appears to be as easy to fill as a saucepan would be.  Another contender was a Corningware kettle.  I find both styles very attractive.

But then I decided I needed a whistle, as back then I was still doing 24/7 caregiving for Dave and could easily be distracted by an emergency clean-up, a fall, or what have you.  I found a beefy, barely used Oxo whistler at a thrift store for $6.  I think it would have cost close to $50 new.  It has the handle mechanism that automatically triggers the spout cover to lift as the kettle is tilted to pour.  The handle stays cool enough if I adjust the flame not to lick up the sides during heating.

It's not like I need to even tell you Eddie, but enjoy that beautiful kettle!

I just used the new kettle for the first time. Since I’ve been used to a whistling kettle I set the timer for 6 mins, about what I estimated the other kettle took to boil enough water for two large cups, 3.5 of tea and it was right on. Ralph I too had been concerned about not having a whistle keep from forgetting the kettle and the timer works perfect.

Thanks guys for the comments. I like the swoop of the handle, that attracted me to this design, plus the rest of my cookware is Farberware SS.

Thanks Kevin! BTW, the Pineapple Jello Slices video was great. I’d never heard of this before and I’ll have to give it a try one of these days soon. Both David and I love Jello and I usually make some every week.

And we both really enjoy Cavalcade of Food. You and Ralph really do a wonderful job on these entertaining and informative videos.

And I’m really loving this “new” kettle. All my pots and pans are Farberware Classic SS and this kettle just completes the set. I like that it will be so easy to keep sparkling clean and free from mineral deposits inside because of the large opening to get inside the kettle for cleaning.

Hope you and Ralph both have a Merry Christmas and stay safe!

I want one

I have a smooth top range, and I haven't found a kettle that had a flat bottom. Most of the newer ones have a ridge around the bottom where it won't sit flat.

Yours looks like it would be perfect.

Hijack: Do you take your kettle off the stove when you are cooking to prevent it from getting splattered?

If I’m cooking something that will splatter I also take the kettle off of the stove Harley,

There is a recessed area in the center of the bottom of this kettle, but don’t think it would interfere with heating properly on a smooth top stove.

Eddie - I'm glad that you are enjoying the kettle, and I think the lid for the kettle matches one of the lids for the Farberware saucepan (not sure which size). Like you, I have many of the Farberware pots - I absolutely love them! I've tried more expensive cookware and always come back to the Farberware!

Sending warm Christmas wishes to you and David! Even through things have to be different this year, I hope the spirit of the season brings you joy and happiness! Here's to having a big Christmas celebration once again in 2021!!

Harley - I often take my kettle off the stove whenever I've got a skillet on the cooktop cooking anything. Helps to keep it clean!
