This fridge, which went to meet its maker some time early this year, served my parents faithfully for almost 30 years. Sadly it was done in by a simple door seal, and even though replacements are available, my mother elected to replace it with a new fridge. I took these photographs because I do that sort of thing. I believe that using something, especially something old, brings honor and dignity to the men who created it.

I don't know the model exactly but I remember it had EAT in it which cracked me up at the time.

2nd photo

Here's the second photo. They had a whole suite of this stuff, when they lived in Panama City. The stove staid in the house (as typical) and they brough this and the dishwasher (also this dastardly shade of Avocado) with them. The dishwasher was sickly even when I was a child and was replaced very frequently; this was the last of the Avocado appliances. I was more than a little miffed that it could have been saved, even if I disliked the color.

Very cool! I've actually warmed up to avocado again, and Coppertone, though I don't think I ever will to harvest gold. I much prefer the 60s yellow. Anyway, these were nice units. Actually that little shelf on the bottom where the soda cans are is ahead of its time. A lot of units didn't have that then.

We had one of the Whirlpool french door bottom freezer ones for a long, long time too, as did an aunt of mine.

I have a Hotpoint very similar to this now, and while I won't mourn the top freezer configuration, which I've never cared for, when it dies, I will mourn the wire shelves. I vastly prefer wire shelves and wish they would still offer them.

Yeah, that was a good fridge. My parents have another Whirlpool and we're anticipating another 25+ years from it. I like Copper, but I don't think anyone in their right mind can like Harvest Gold. Avocado, well, I suppose in the right setting, it would work. I once saw a huge built-in unit that was sink, countertop, fridge, and stove all in one unit, and it was, save a few accent pieces, ALL avocado fibreglass. It was being chucked but I didn't even have a vehicle capable of hauling it, nevermind a place to put it (It was about 10' long).
