Iron soleplate buffer

Some years ago I came upon a 1955 GE Travel iron that was perfect except for a water-related etching on the soleplate. I took the iron to a local servicer who had a soleplate buffer. For $4.00 and five minutes of my time, the soleplate looked like new.
From a distance I could see that the buffer looked like a grinding wheel with some sort of attachment.
Does anyone know how to make a soleplate buffer?

sounds like the same thing youd use to buff a cast aluminum vacuum piece...

You may be right. Perhaps the vacuum people know the answer.
I'd like to keep my newer irons buff.
... by newer I mean my Sunbeam Jewel iron and the GE SHOT-OF-STEAM irons. I like a heavy iron.

Probably

just a fabric wheel with some Jeweler's Rouge (no, you don't get that at the Lancome counter, you madcap!)

Can buff out scratches on most watch crystals with a fabric wheel and rouge.
