My Aunt on my Dads side has a 1983 Amana 5 Ton Gas Package unit is the worst hack I have ever seen..
The condenser fan went out and they quoted her $697 bucks for a new motor..
I knew that was B/S for the motor only not including labor.I took a pic of the old motor which was a G.E. 1075 R.P.M. and 1.4 Amps..
The quote was for some Chinese 1/5 H.P. 825 R.P.M. and 1.5 Amps. The fan is a huge shallow 4 blade fan that has been on that unit sense new.
I screwed up and bought the one on the quote for 60 bucks then looked at the pictures so, I found a U.S. Motor that was perfect and it came with the Cap.
That 1900 S.Q. foot house she bought is turning into the money pit in the worst way.. Its about 5 miles from Oak-Ridge Labs in Knoxville.
Who ever built that house used Masonite for siding and added a huge South facing sun-room with glass and no flashing or sealant anywhere.
The house is rotting and needs about 15 grand to fix it. The plumbing had to be redone last summer and then I go up there to install that fan.The house was built in 1984 and they put that huge 5ton unit in that house and wired it up like something I have never seen in my life..
There was 4 Caps in there that were all wired together like a daisy chain. The main one for the compressor and fan and three more that were linked kinda. The wires were all red from the whip to the unit and then they were all pink because the wires and the capacitors were laying on the shelf right above the in-shot burners and they were sprawled everywhere so there cooked. The control board was dangling by the T-Stat wires. The induced draft blower pressure switch was bypassed totally but the draft blower runs anytime the system runs heat or cool,I have no idea why.The pressure switch for the compressor was bypassed which is a Tecumseh compressor.
I wonder if that moron who lived there was thinking or I guess I just answered my question he don't?I had to put new wiring, relays, control board, and the fuse I yanked out of the box was not a fuse it was two copper water lines that were cut with the adapters at the end of each, talking about fucking hack job.
I don't know if I should even work on it but, my Dads, Sister is the black Sheep of the family like me and her 3 sons won't do anything for her unless it's watching there kids. She don't have the money for a new unit right now.
I have to get the heat working for the winter, I shut off the gas.I don't see how that thing did not burn down the house down.
I don't know how long this thing will last. The unit now that I cleaned the condenser coil and has a new fan and the unit turns on for about 8 mins and then turns off when it normally runs for 10 or so mins when the inside was filled halfway with pine needles..
The duct work is even worse in this house, some registers get all the air while most get none like the Sun-room.
I have seen a ton of hvac hack jobs this summer fixing these rentals of Dads.
She just called me and told me it stopped working about 5 A.M. when she got up.
I have a feeling that it is froze up bad ,I cleaned the coil to lower the power use but, now it works to well. The humidity was 88% in Knoxville yesterday and when I finally got that thing running
at 4 p.m yesterday it was 89 in the house and it had to run all nite for the heat-soak I hope.
I am going to have to go back up there tomorrow it looks like. The blower was set on the lowest tap ,I am going to increase the blower speed static pressure be damned.
I also could not get that original four blade fan off that old motor at all.Normally there is about 2 inches of shaft that sticks up through that hub and I take sand paper and smooth it out and WD-40 it..
I let that thing soak with everything and my 3 claw could not get that thing off it started to bend the hub.
I put a 3 blade deeper pitch on there that is about 2 inches shorter than the old one but I molded a shroud around the fan blades and sealed all the holes with sealant. The C.F.M. prob off by 300 but, with a clean coil and all the holes plug it should be better than the old one.
I have been thinking now that I have slept I wonder if that guy was trying to make a crude kick-start and gave up?
The dual Cap had wires coming all attached to just the Com and Herm but, the fan was untouched there they were all linked all together and the last one had a wire going to the old fan,the other 3 caps were singles..
I have a real Kick-start device I was thinking off adding on there. That compressor does pull some crazy Amps when starting
and yes there out of spec running and starting, hence the water pipes for fuses I guess. The compressor is old and way oversized, pressures don't have time to equalize till it's starts again, plus like most old units it uses a orifice instead of a T.X.V.
I am just trying to put a band-aid on it till I can find her a used packaged heat-pump,screw the gas she hates it anyways.
Now, that I have done all of this maybe I should have just burn down the house and collect the insurance
everything is falling apart.I am going to check in on filling a suit against the inspector cause that house was bought 6 years ago there is no way all that damage is six years old..
