Is it worth patching a hole in plastic tub?

Hi all,

I have a Kenmore Elite Calypso washer (model 110.22066102 serial# CR0407557--see pics--btw, is it from 2007?) and I'm trying to decide between giving up on it and repairing it.

My main question is summed up in the subject line. The hole is as wide as a nickle and twice as long. I have most of the pieces an wonder whether it's worth trying a repair like in the video below or something else you might suggest. Also, do you know the US equivalents for the glues used in the video? I first thought Milliput for the putty but I don't know of a version indicated for this application. Any idea what the second one is? Please let me know.

Tub patch ... can't say, have not attempted it.

I did it on a Neptune

Bearings wore out so bad the pulley grinned in two holes in the putter tub. did use a gorilla type glue on mine (it was a two phase glue) and it worked. The hole was on the top part of the drum, so the only water that would affect it, is spinning. I’d do it if you can! Calypso are a neat machine!

i did it on an Atlantis:

used some polyethylene cut from a bottle,sealed with silicone rubber,secured with a couple small stainless steel screws. buildup of Corrosion on the aluminum hub caused the plastic basket of the Atlantis to run off center and wear against the tub,rubbing a hole.

Never really dealt with patching up holes in plastic outer tubs but I have patched up a few pin holes in the outer tub on my 1963 RCA Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII washer and so far no leaks between the tub and baseplate.

Given these are HE and the way the Calypso works, the tub isn't filled higher than an inch at basically any point.

If the holes are up the side I'd give you a pretty high success rate.

If they are around the bottom area success might be less likely.

But I'd say it's certainly worth a try.

Materials should be pretty cheap and these machines are pretty good performers.

If I were you I would try to patch from the inside.
So basket out.
Less likely for water to "sit" on the sealing area.

I would get a piece of Semi-flexible plastic about half an inch wider than the hole.

I don't think there will be exact equivalent glues.
But going to any hardware store should bring you something equivalent.
Maybe even try some boating supply store if near you - plastic that needs to be patched water tight sounds like a boating thing.
Maybe even plumbing supplies (patching tubs for example).

From experience I found 2 component glues either as paste or putty work better than stuff out of the tube.

Sand any adhesion area well with coarse sand paper as that gives more surface area of adhesion.
Just make sure to clean well before gluing.

And going around the perimeter on both sides with a good quality silicone or similar sealant should make sure no water leaks.

Depends on where is the damage.

The final rinse level is a little higher, and the sump area at back is deeper.

Spray rinses and recirculation may splatter water around the tub at higher levels.  And spin extraction depending on size and type of load.

Polypropylene Epoxy works for many applications.....

have also had success with fiberglass patches as well

would probably help if we knew exactly where this crack/hole is at to which patch method may work best....

I’ve patched a lot of tubs.

PVC cleaner and glue works well. I use drywall mesh to help build up a good patch. The trick it to patch both sides.

More about the Calypso tub damage and planned repair

Thank you for all your repplies. I'm thinking I'll give it a shot.

The hole is on the side wall but right at the bottom of the tub so I realize the likelihood of success is lower so I'll compensate with redundancy/overkill. I did find a couple other youtube videos of folks patching holes succesfully.

Ideally, I'll patch both sides--in and out. But the spanner nut is not budging even with the spanner wrench. Is there a technique or method to get it moving? I don't have much room for hammering the wrench.

As far as the patch goes, here's what I'm thinking:
- clean / scrub & sand area 2-1/2" around hole
- use Loctite Plastics Bonding System to glue/hold the pieces in their place
- embed a piece of metallic mesh (like window screen) in a medium coat of J-B Weld 50133 Plastic Bonder Structural Adhesive on top of hole and extending 1" beyond the edge of the hole and let it cure fully
- cover all this with a generous amount of JB WaterWeld extending 2" beyond the edges of the hole and let it cure fully
- seal the edges of the WaterWeld patch, but with what? Gorilla glue? Silicone?

Hole In The Outer Tub Of A Calypso

Hi Fernan, What caused the hole ?,

 

A picture of the fault would be helpful.

 

I have a couple of extra Calypso outer tubs I you want one get in touch.

 

If this machine has not been apart it would be good to take it apart and check the U joint seals and relubricate the main shaft seals to try and keep this cool washer running as long as possible.

Sugru is also a good alternative. I fixed tubs and dishwashers tubs with It and patches are still there and new like if it were yesterday.
