I ordered some new lids from World Kitchen for our 5-cup Pyrexware bowls and they arrived with a Use and Care leaflet for CorningWare Pop-Ins. The leaflet was dated 1998 and lists the manufacturer as Corning Consumer Products.

The instructions state that CorningWare Pyroceram is safe for use under the broiler and in both microwave and conventional ovens. It also warrants the Pyroceram components for 10 years.

Contrast this with the Use and Care instructions for "CorningWare" stoneware, which clearly warns you NOT to put it under the broiler. The warranty has been reduced to ONE year because if you use stoneware as freezer-to-oven-to-tableware, it WILL fail, most likely within the old 10-year warranty period.

It took a mere 8 years for World Kitchen to utterly destroy an American icon. Heartbreaking.

I went into a Corning outlet last year with the thought of buying a bunch of pyroceram, because I had seen literally piles of it a year earlier but didn't have the need for it at the time. Much to my surprise all they had were piles of that godawful French White--that's when I found out that pyroceram is gone forever.

So now I check the resale shops periodically, and often I'm lucky.

Tragic.

It's truely disgusting and sad Joe. Tom, I gingerly take care of my Visions as well as Corningware pieces I have. I also have tons of the corningware stuff (I forget what it was called) that matched patterns of Correll dishes in the early to mid-1970s. All original owner here.

Luckily though there is scads of the real stuff out there and in the thrift stores. The other week at the flea market a guy brought some in, the old cornflower motif, and it was gone pretty quick. I think word is out it's no longer available.

Oh, what a shame. It's wonderful stuff. I'm glad I have some nice pieces, including an electric percolator. Not that many years ago there was a store in an outlet mall back in Minnesota that had all kinds of it, and you could find any sort of replacement lid you may have needed.

Scott,

That electric perk makes the best coffee. I don't know how many realized that the electric perks were 'recalled' and are not allowed to be sold on Ebay because of the recall.
I have over a dozen corning ware electric perks in vaious designs on the outside. Corning Ware made the electic perks in the 6 cup and 10 cup size, as well as some that were styled after the Proctor Silex with the removable bowl.

You people just don't seem to understand that if we have to actually stand behind our product and replace it when it breaks, that cuts into stockholder profits! Our studies show its to our financial benefit to view everything from a very shortsighted, quarterly cycle perspective. Eventually our customers will dwindle away and we'll be bought out by some other goliath who will milk whatever remains of our brand name recognition.

Love,

From World Kitchen's own mouth:

Q. Why should I upgrade my CorningWare products and purchase the new FRENCH WHITE products?

A. There are five new shapes, ideal for complementing your current FRENCH WHITE dishes or starting a beginner's collection of FRENCH WHITE dishes. Each shape has new handles for safety and comfort. The glass covers provide a contemporary look, and the plastic covers are vented with an inner seal to optimize freshness. The new design eliminates areas where food can become trapped, allowing room for fingers to easily wipe remnants away. This makes cleanup a breeze, either by hand or in the dishwasher.

Maybe it's just me, but calling it an "upgrade" is like saying Wilma Flintstone's warthog garbage disposer is an improvement over Rosie, the Jetson's robot maid.
