It's Time To Do the Dishes!

I just posted the July 1953 Issue of Electrical Merchandising the Ephemera Library if anyone would like a copy. I love the cover with not only an ash tray full of cigarettes butts on the dinner table, but butts on the dinner plates as well lol.

This issue is dedicated to early automatic dishwashers. Complete history is shown including the how the GE and Hotpoint Dishwasher evolved from the Walker dishwasher company. The Westinghouse from the Conover Dishwasher and early images of Hobart's KitchenAid dishwashers. Then a thorough explanation, images and feature charts of all available home dishwashers in 1953. A another story on early Dishwasher Detergents also makes for a fascinating read.

Wonderful Issue. I remember when I first found it in the late 70s. Heaven! Better than sex!

I would think that would be rather insulting to your host to butt out your cigarette on the dinner plate.Especially when there is an ash tray right in front. Might as well blow your nose on the table cloth before you leave the table.

Clearly a dramatic point was being made concerning Polio, the Korean War, and or Communists in our midst, which needed to be underscored as only stubbing out your butt is this fashion can achieve.

It also is possible the words, "lets see if that new fangled dish washing device can clean this!", was used as an added flourish. See link for how hygenically things turned out:

rpms, DJ Conner showed us that cloth napkins were best for that. My grandmother used cloth hankies and I remember that they had to be soaked in warm water in a pail before being washed. I do remember seeing people use their uncleared dinner plates for ash trays in restaurants many decades ago. It was pretty gross. We were raised to treat meal service, anyplace, with reverence.

Both my parents were heavy smokers, but woe-be-it to anyone who put out a cig on their plate in front of mom.
