Im surprised no one remembered James Dean was killed Sept 30th 1955.I watched Rebel Without a Cause the other night in the garage,I have a really good 16mm color print of the movie. What surprised me was he was in the kitchen and in the background very clearly was their washer.Guess what it was??????????????????????????

I used to know both East of Eden and Rebel Without a Cause backward and forward. I don't think there's a 9/30 that goes by where I don't think about what might have been.

I didn't know washers very well back when I was into Rebel so I won't even hazard a guess.

What a tragic lose

to such a fine actor. I always wonder what kind of actor he truly would have been. Also a fine looking man as well. I heard rumors that he was gay.

I don't know if Dean was really gay or not. He hung around with arty and androgenous types before anybody had even heard of the term androgenous. If it felt good, they did it. No wonder he was, and to a decent extent still is, so easy to identify with for many young men.

I had Dean fever so bad that I bought myself a Porsche Speedster. One of the biggest mistakes I've ever made in my whole life.

brings back memories of the film version of the play

"come back to the five & dime, jimmy dean, jimmy dean"!

saw it in 83 and had a copy of it for the longest time, must get another! cher is too funny! and sandy dennis is classic as mona, the "supposed" mother of james dean's child. and karen black ofcourse too, can't forget her! worth watching for sure!

when you mentioned the anniversary of james dean's death i thought of that reunion party in that texas woolworth 5 & dime.!

Well, since...

September 30th is my birthday I tend to focus on happier events and look at the others that share the same birth date. 46 and looking forward to many more.

Dean can become a focus and study of an individual actor like Heath Ledger. It will be interesting to see, as this crowd ages, to see who is remembered and who is not.

Launderall Washer

Evidently, the washing machine choice for the Stark family was a Launderall. (I wonder how many different washing machines were sitting around the Warner Bros. prop department back in 1955?)

William Bast, Dean's lover for the last several years of his life, is still very much alive. He wrote a book in 2006 ("Surviving James Dean") that details their relationship, and no one has refuted Bast's claims.

I let all my Dean memorabilia go when we had my mom's estate sale last year, including a giant 3-sheet poster for "The James Dean Story." I also had a couple of paperback copies, one of them mint, of Bast's first book on Dean written in the 50's. I only kept hardcover bios and a copy of "Children of the Dark" which was the basis for "Rebel Without a Cause."

All of this was part of my cleansing ritual for all the stuff I had collected since I was around 15. If I hadn't looked at it or used it in years, why did I need it? So far I have very few regrets. I'm sure some Dean fans felt like they had hit the motherlode, as the guy who ran the estate sale had a whole Dean/Hollywood vignette going in the family room.

Vic Damone

gives a brief overview of James Dean in his current autobio, and mentions Bast's experiences. Damone was married to actress Pier Angeli, who was Dean's "girlfriend" prior to their marriage.

September 30th is the birthday of my favorite singer, Johnny Mathis, so like oldhouseman, I have sunnier thoughts!

An ex-friend of mine is huge James Dean fan, and has quite a collection of memorabilia. She refuses to believe that he was gay. I haven't seen Rebel Without a Cause for a long time same for Come Back to The Five & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean.

2QT 2B str8.

She refuses to believe that he was gay.

It perplexes females that there are males that have no real use for them. And that there are males they can't manipulate with their "charms".

Or as Patsy and Edina once said "Perhaps he just needs something he can hold on to."

Sometimes men just fill a void in men that women can't naturally manage.

Even though Dean gets more recognition for Rebel than his other two films, I feel his best performance was in "East of Eden." He really made that film what it was, and although he obviously did the same with Rebel, "East of Eden" was a better film overall.

I can stil remember Natalie Wood's phone number from Rebel: LExington 0-5549.

It perplexes some women, scares others and enrages a few. After all, we're potential competition for their mates.
