Hi all,

I just got an Osterizer Pulsematic 10 blender at a thrift store for $6.95, I am using it to replace our crappy less then 3 year old Cuisinart blender which has never worked good and now the motor is starting to make bad noises along with the smell of burning windings.

Does anyone have any idea of the age of it? Should I do any maintenance before really using it?

Matt

I'd say it's mid to late 70's being green and all. They were sold for a lot of years. Nice thing is you can still get parts and accessories. There are mini jars, ice crushing blades, a milkshake blade, stainless steel jar etc. I keep meaning to get one of those milk shake blades not that I really need it, just to have one in the collection. There was also at one time a mini food processor chopper attachment which is actually quite handy but I'm not sure if it's available any longer.
Here's a link to an online store

So long as it purrs there's really nothing to do other than after you wash it run the machine empty for about 10 seconds to dry out the blade assembly. They can get sticky.

Matt,

I'd take a guess that that blender is from the early art of the 1970s.

I myself have a few Osterizers of that vintage and they are great.
I have replaced the blades in mine with a replacement Osterizer ice crushing blade, and its always good to replace the gasket as well

Mid Seventies

I bought the Identical blender in 1974! It was a great machine, and only replaced the unit because I found a two speed Chrome Beehive style in about 2004! Still ran perfect.

If the motor shaft turns OK-its most likely good to go.The blade can get stuck from sitting unused.Try soaking the blade by putting water in the jar overnight. If that doesn't fee it-new blades are readly available.Same with containers and gaskets-replace that, too.Usually a gasket comes with the new blade.Yes,these Oster beast-of-blender are superior to the new ones found today-and that older machine is better quality than the new ones.Another thing on the older Oster blenders-the motor is mounted in a "floating" mount in the base so seating the jar is eassier and its quieter.Noticed in many new Osters they are now the "chain saw in the kitchen sound!"The older Osters the drive is an actual part of the motor shaft-in new ones the drive part is metal-but its connected to the motor shaft with a PLASTIC one!

I have never had to replace a motor drive in an older Oster blender-Maybe the rubber mounts for the floating motor mounts have distinigrated.Or the drive from the motor to the jar drive has broke.Honestly never seen this until now.Or is the drive socket on your blades worn out?

Both are worn

I the original blade assembly has a worn socket that partially engages. I bought a new blade assembly thinking that would fix the problem. Same problem with the new blade assembly. The upper part of the square drive, little over 1/8 of an inch is rounded from wear.

Sounds like the previous owner of your blender may have abused it-putting on or taking off the container while the drive was still turning.Honestly never have taken one of the older Oster bases apart to see how the older drives were put together-always had the impression the drives on the Oster machine were part of the motor shaft like Blendtec.

Blender Repaired and working

Finally received the replacement square drive shaft and collar. It was easily changed once the motor shaft was immobilized. I like the Cyclomatic's pulse control in chopping food. Easier to control the texture when processing! and far quieter than most blenders available today too!

Your new (old) Osterizer

Mpatoray: NICE FIND! A Beauty. I have a few, after seeing Petek's collection here at aw.org..and picked up several..my last second chromed beauty similar to yours and a Model 541 with 791 watts. Some have 850 watts, but no big deal in difference as I can tell. I found a blender cookbook at a Thrift store - these are great machines..built like a panza tank.
