Dan-- what a nice colour!

If there is a suffix...K45SS, it's newer, and if there is NO suffix, just K45, it's older. I think that this one is from the 70s, and is a very desirable catch.

"SS" means, in this instance, "Solid State."

Mine is from the mid 80s.

Dan, if it says "Hobart" on it anywhere it's definitely a keeper. The manual, however, looks a lot like the one for my non-Hobart model that was purchased around 1990.

Aha, Thanks for the insight, Lawrence. The users manual says K45SS, but the plate on the mixer just says k45. I had thought that perhaps the "SS" meant Stainless Steel or something like that, but the manual - which also has a price tag - shows the control panel with "solid state" while the mixer doesn't have that, so that solves that particular mystery.

It was quite a deal: Ten bucks at the Children's Hospital thrift store in Kent, Washington.

Kitchenaid

The gears are metal but it still has a nylon worm gear designed to fail in a case of abuse. Go to Kitchenaid.com and then link to conversations. You can find all the inside info you need. The bowl and beaters will set you bake at least $100.00 if they aren't included. craigs had the whip, paddle and hook listed today for $20.00.

Yes, I would say that's from the early mid 70s. If there's a picture of the one with the whip and glass bowl in the manual (4C?) it's before '77. Hobart in all events, and a very nice find!

I think SS is stainless steel. I think some of the older bowls are some kind of tin or other. The older units of these had a little loop thingy on front perhaps to help in lifting it up, and some kind of a funky screw set up to hold in the bowl, rather than the twist down type.

Very nice find, Dan! You'll love the sound when mixing. I have an almond Hobart (with the bowl lift) on the workbench that I want to disassemble and have chromed or copper plated - wouldn't that be cool? More for daddy's to-do list!

These always go very fast at estate sales, but I've been lucky to find many of the attachments for them that people leave behind or don't realize go with the KA.

Congrats on a great mixer! Did you have to buy a train ticket for the fork and spoon?

Greg, I scored on the giant fork and spoon. They let me ship my "skis" to Chicago for free (since I had a full fare ticket out of Chicago) and then onto Seattle as checked baggage!!!

A copper plated KA - how lovely. If it were up to me, I'd copper plate everything not moving.
