It is doable solo (I've loaded dozens in the bank of a Tahoe), but it is much more manageable with two people. Good luck!

My first vintage appliance and the one I have dreamed of finding for years. Paid $25.00 at the Urban Thrift store. Control panel is in excellent condition, interior is in good shape for being 37 years old. Will definitely need new racks, upper rack has obviously been replaced with one from a lower model, no adjustable tines or height adjustment. I really don't know where to start with checking the machine out, the resale store said that the person who donated it said it was working and there was still water in the bottom. Open to all input and any help would be greatly appreciated! Here are a few pics, should I be worried about the rust around the base of the heating element?

May well be surface rust from water with an iron content.
Begin with cleaning the area with one of the rust/lime removers like CLR or Lime-Away. Rinse well afterward.
If you see obvious sources of rust, then there are ways to deal with them. But do the simple thing first, and try not to worry yourself into worst-case scenario before it's absolutely necessary. A lot of "rusty" sumps are just stains from water.
Also, that bottom rack was replaced for a reason, and the reason was almost certainly rust. So, the rust staining in your sump could well have come from that.

I may be off base here, but my observation is that upper rack is a generic (one-rack-fits-all) scenario offered by Whirlpool. Ijust have this feeling rather than them trying to have a couple of replacement racks--those that adjust and those which didn't.

I believe the upper rack is from another Kitchenaid from that era, as it has a metal wash arm and china guard to protect items in the lower rack from being hit by the upper arm. One way to tell if it is from an 18 is the length of the upper wash arm... does it go only 3/4 of the way to the back of the rack or all the way? The 18 series upper wash arms were shorter and were replaced by a longer arm/bigger diameter china guard starting with the 19 series.
It is the shorter wash arm it just doesn't have the flexible dividers or height adjustment which I really liked on my Mom's 1977 18 series. If anyone has this type of rack available for purchase, please let me know. I would like to replace the lower rack as well as a few of the tines are rusted.
Detergent Dispenser
It appears that I can get a replacement detergent dispenser online as mine is leaking. Is it recommended to get the bi-metal pieces as well if I am replacing the dispenser. I'm sad that the new dispensers are white instead of blue, but oh well
