OMG! I know that neighborhood from the 1970s! A high school classmate of mine who is a doctor at Emory lives there now. How neat.
In the 70s, they wanted to bulldoze large swaths of homes to put in a connector from the I85-I75 routes through the city for the Stone Mountain expressway. There were hearings and houses were condemned and bulldozed. I remember reading about one long time lady resident telling the hearing that they could not possibly know how much to offer her for her house because they had not been inside and she might have Waterford Crystal doorknobs. In the end, the road was killed and the neighborhood was saved. The Stone Mountain Connector now starts at the intersection of North Druid Hills Road and Lawrenceville Highway. Of course, getting to that point through the city is a real B with all capital letters. Property values had sunk during the destruction and a lot of the nice houses were rental property, but values soared after the situation was resolved.
