Kenmore Packed With Tide? (POD 2-7-10)

Today's picture shows a vintage (1950 something?) Kenmore with a box of Tide. This makes me wonder if Sears was making their own detergent back then. I've assumed yes, since they had Sears brand of something for pretty much every category. If they did have it, wouldn't it make more sense to include a sample of Sears detergent with the washer, rather than advertising a competitor? Of course, I assume Sears got paid something to enclose that box of Tide. But that is a one time deal, while someone who converts to Sears detergent will buy it regularly.

That pic was probably 1956,Tide could have made Sears detergent at the time.Plus Im sure they were paid to put those in the machines.In those days I think Tide came in every machine made just about.Dash and All for the front loaders,Thanks Bobby

Sears Detergent

I looked in a 1954 Sears Catalog,they sold Soapthetic Soap powder and Kenicide Powder for getting rid of germs.For the washing machine.6.45 for a 25 pound box and 9.45 for the Kenicide for a 25lb pail. Bobby

Tide from this era was very high sudzing. Sure to cause a Whirly/Kenmo to sudz-lock every time. And they did ALL the time.

I even wonder about using current Tide in a vintage Kenmore. Not that that thought is likely to cross PG's mind as a possiblity! ("An old washer? Surely there is no one left who has or uses one! Why worry?") But, while I never had big problems using Tide in a belt drive Kenmore, there were more suds than I really liked seeing.

Maybe packing Tide wasn't a bad idea, after all. Sears got the money for including it. And a chance to sell their own products by saying: "Well, this Tide is OK, but it makes too many suds for a fine automatic like this! Our detergent is specially formulated..."

....they've certainly cheaped out since then. That Kenmore came with a box of Tide. My Admiral came with a one use packet of Tide 2x.

Way back in the 50's and 60's, one of Tides active cleaning ingredients was crushed oyster shell. It obviously acted as a abrasive. I can remember my mom's freind using Tide, and although she sorted carefully, and chose proper cycles, and temps, her clothes were alot more faded than ours. My mother used either Cheer or All, and we never had fade problems. I was told about the shell addition, by a retired P.G. rep. I'm sure glad detergents have advanced.

Tide

I still use tide in my 55 Kenmore,its my everyday machine.Been buying Tide since 72.I was 19.I dont overload it and use half to threefourths of a cup.No suds lock. Thanks Bobby

Our neighbor who got a 58 LK before we did used Tide for a couple of years until the motor in the machine burned out. After her husband replaced the motor, she switched to ALL. In 1976, I used a couple of Kenmores with Tide and was amazed at how quickly they suds-locked when they went into the post-wash spin.
