My Aunt Doris just gave me her old Kirby vac that she got in 1950. I want to make sure I pack it up properly for the ride home (750 miles), and I can't figure out how to remove the handle and the bag assembly. There is a knurled nut that I tried to unscrew, but didn't seem to want to come off. Removed the Sani-emptor cover, but couldn't figure out how to get the bag assembly off either. She has the instruction book, but we can't find it. I don't want to break anything, so I'd greatly appreciate any help.

It's easy. The knurled knob you're speaking of should twist out. There are no threads on it and a good tug should remove it. The other alternative would to be unscrewing the handle from the fork. It's not necessary to remove the sani-emptor/bag, but can twist right off it you want to say place it in a plastic bag .
Give us a model # when you get home and I'll see if I can find you the owners manual. Greg

The model should be a 510 if its a 1950 year. Great cool vacuum.

Yes the "nut' you mention is just a pin that you pull out. The sani Emptor twists off the fan case, with no need to remove the bag.
