These look like the ones from the 11/1986 brochure. According to the brochure, this washer does have an extra rinse option, unlike the other Kitchenaid washer, the one with the electro-mechanical push-buttons.

Does anyone know if Kitchenaid washers ever got the dual-action agitator? Is that a significantly better agitator on these direct-drive machines, or no big deal?

The mechanical timer machines in the upper range had the three speed motor and the larger DA turquoise agitator. Some chepaer KitchenAid washers sold at Sears had the white smaller DA agitator like WP machines with the same initial agitation on high and the remainder of the wash time on gentle.

So would a later model Kitchenaid washer with a mechanical timer, like the one pictured here, have the three-speed motor plus the dual-action agitator? The agitator here is white, not turquoise, so maybe that means this was a cheaper model sold at Sears?

I had this electronic control model before I found the rapid-advance mechanical timer. Mine worked fine most of the time but once in a while, the board would blink off and then restart itself on a random cycle of it's own choosing. The last time I used it, I was barely able to get it to drain the full tub of water before administering the last rites once and for all.

The earlier KA washers didn't have the auger, dual-action agitator as those patents or exclusive rights were tied up by Sears until 1987. After that, KA used the dual-action with a larger base agitator running on medium speed for "normal" wash action. The larger agitator running on medium gave a slower stroke but the same length as before - same transmission as WP & KM washers. Later the KA agitators were all white like the KM and WP washers but still retained the larger base and three-speed profiles as the earlier models. The rapid-advance machines only came in two speeds and had the smaller agitator base and faster stroke just like the WP & KM washers. I need to spend some time studying the wiring diagram and figure out how to wire in a three speed motor to my rapid-advance washer so I can use the big agitator, I like that wash speed much better than the faster stroke.

BLACK KA WASHER & DRYER PAIR

Doug that black is near the end of the KA laundry appliances. It would be an excellent pair I love the fact that they added the excellent flush through timed dispensers to this machine. I am diffidently on the lookout for a pair of these at some point in time, this is a great performing pair that could be used as a daily driver for another 20 years .

The black Kitchenaid set was from a Los Angeles Craigslist ad earlier in the summer. It was being offered for $400 from an appliance dealer.

An all-electronic console intrigues me, as does the push-button rapid-advance timer model like Gansky has. Who doesn't like lots of push-buttons?

However, as we only have room for one extra washer/dryer set, which will need to serve as backup for when our Frigidaire front-loader set bites the dust, I'm thinking that the old-fashioned electro-mechanical dial timer is probably the better choice. It's likely going to be easier to fix down the road, if/when something goes wrong.

KitchenAid agitator

In 2000 we bought a MOL KitchenAid set. I was disappointed that the cool turquoise DA agitator with the stainless trim on top had been replaced with the boring white DA just like you would see in a Whirlpool, etc.

It was a good machine that I sold for peanuts in 2007 when we got our Maytag Epic 9700 frontloder. I should have kept the KA washer - I still kick myself for that one. We still have the dryer which performs really well.
