We love our kitchenaid dishwasher from the 80s! Works perfectly but recently the detergent flaps won't open to release the detergent. We've tried soaking it in CLR and vinegar in hopes it's just a build up problem, but no luck. Ideas?

There is what's called a bi-metal strip that releases these covers. The first thing I would do is lift out the the wash arm and check if the filter under the wash arm is clogged. It is the motor load that creates the current load that heats up the bi-metal strip that releases the little clips that release the covers. If the filter is clogged, the water flow is not strong enough to put enough of a load on the motor to heat the bi-metal to open the covers.

It could be the that the dispenser needs replacing, but check the filter first.

Thank you Tomturbomatic! That worked! You're a genius, the filter was clogged we got it all cleaned out and gave the whole inside a good cleaning. Working like she should again!

I am glad your machine is back in business. One thing you need to keep a watch on is a little hole on the underside of the wash arm that is supposed to keep the the top of the filter clean so check it occasionally to make sure that it is cleaning the top of the filter. Kitchen Aids were great machines, but they did need filter maintenance. If your filter clogged it means that you are doing the right thing by not pre-rinsing the dishes before loading them. I am glad that the club was able to help. Remember that we are here to help you keep your vintage machines going. Enjoy.
