Hi everyone! I recently picked up this KitchenAid portable dishwasher off of Facebook marketplace for $75. Due to some complicated issues it was in storage for about a month until I moved into my new place. Now that I'm fully moved in I wanted to get this thing up and running so I didn't have to do those pesky dishes by hand.

This is where I have run into a couple issues, the first issue came from my ignorance on these devices as a whole, I realized the seller never gave me the faucet adapter. I have tried a couple different ones off of amazon and a local hardware store and none of them fit to the coupler. The second issue I'm running into is that I'm not even sure it turns on, is the light supposed to turn on when plugged in or is that only something that turns on during a cycle? If there are any ways for me to tell the electrical side of it is okay let me know.

If there are any other servicing tips you would recommend before turning it on please let me know as I want to make sure I don't break it. I have only seen great things online about these and how powerful/reliable they are so I would love to see it up and running.

For some context I am not the most knowledgeable on dishwashers or appliances in general so I may need a more simple explanation than some others here. I am however excited to work on this and hopefully see it up and running so any assistance or advice is seriously appreciated.

Thank you!

Owners manual

The owners manual for this dishwasher is found in the library, accessed by the tab at the top right of the page. Sort for KitchenAid and look for the KDR-17 portable.

17 series KitchenAid front loading portable dishwasher

This dishwasher looks to be in really great shape. Many portables were not used much so it’s probably a viable machine, but it does have over 40 years of age on it close to 50 actually.

Before you try to turn it on definitely dump at least a gallon of water in it hot water is not a bad idea, the faucet adapter should be easy to find the faucet adapter that was used for these was the most popular size.

The light on the control pad only comes on when it’s running not when it’s just plugged in.

You can put the hose into the sink and dump some water in it and let it run and make sure that it circulates the water and also pumps the water out even if you don’t have the faucet adapter you’ll need faucet adapter to use automatically normally run only with hot water although you could run it with cold water if you were just rinsing off dishes that were gonna be washed later on the hot cycle.

Test

Thank you guys! I realized the door had to be latched shut to turn on so it seems that still works which is for sure a good start. I will deep clean it and test it out tomorrow with some hot water to make sure it circulates and pumps water correctly like John suggested. The faucet adapter I got is less than a mm too big to fit under the bearings of the drain hose head so I might go ahead and manually file that adapter down until it just barely fits (I really don't want to order another and wait for shipping haha)

I'll let y'all know how that all goes!

Are there any parts that commonly go bad on these with time I should look at replacing because yeah, it has a lot of time under its belt?

KitchenAid KD 17 series dishwasher

I would try lubricating that faucet coupler both inside and outside on the adapter with cooking oil, margarine, etc. it doesn’t seem like it should be that close and not fit, once everything is lubricated you pull down on the ring as you push the Faucet coupler up onto the adapter it’s not always a smooth operation until it gets broken in a bit.

As far as the things that can go wrong on this dishwasher, there are hundreds of postings about KD15 through 17 dishwashers. If you look in the archives on this site. I would not go looking for problems. This looks to be a very low use machine I would just use it and enjoy it and deal with problems as they occur, but if you’re interested in what could go wrong, look in the history.

Result

I wanted to updated on the progress of my testing. I ran to lowes to grab myself a metal file as the bottom edge of the adapter was just slightly too big. I filed it down just until it fit nice and snug. It seems to properly pull water in and pump it out back into the sink and when testing it on some dishes it definitely is doing something in there. I'm very excited to have what looks like a fantastic dishwasher as I absolutely hate doing dishes by hand haha

Thank you for the suggestions, I honestly love the passion for appliances on this cite that I never knew existed.
