So I've been using my beloved kitchenaid kds-58 daily for months now. I've had the front panel off a few times checking stuff out. Well last week I though I'd be proactive and maybe look into rotating the detergent cup 180* incase it ever starts leaking around the cup lid shafts. Well I noted that one of the screen heads was rusted away and the first one I went to loosen snapped so I put it back together and kept running it, not able to rotate the detergent cup. Low and behold, the next cycle I ran, I found the first cup didn't open to release the detergent.. decided to check it out tonight, I adjusted the bimetal clips that hold the kids shut, (not sure of proper procedure but I moved the offending unit back a hair). Ran a cycle and NOW my shafts are leaking water...

I'm assuming there are some orings in there, if you guys who have dealt with this before could provide some assistance with the sizes or what steps I should do, that would be amazing!!

Thank you!!
Matt

Welp...... I replaced the Orings in the detergent cup.. easy enough. Then I noticed the detergent cup was also dripping where two screw heads had broke off..

Tried drilling with some small diamond bits and gauged wire drill bits but wouldn't work. Decided the best route was to just remove the plastic bulkheads thus releasing the rusted beasts from their prison.

It worked, to a point. Got one out fine, and then disaster struck. Chipped out the side on the second screw.

New plan: jb weld to rebuild the missing plastic, drill, and rescrew!

Well I used some jb water weld putty. Scuffed the surface and packed the putty into place. After setting for an hour, I drilled and ran some screws in to set the threads. Allowed it to harden more, sand down, and mounted with new stainless hardware. I also made a new rubber gasket and washers. Gonna test in the morning if it holds water.

Nicely Done!

Thanks for sharing your thought process. Please share how resilient this fix is over time. This exemplifies why I enjoy this website: yet another fine illustration of how "thinking outside the box" rescues these old appliances from the landfill. Cheers.
