Kitchenaid KUD dishwasher

Greetings! I have a Kitchenaid KUDM220T2 dishwasher. Our house was built in 1976, we've been here since '93. I believe this machine is probably original to the house. The washer has performed flawlessly all these years. Lately it is starting to make a loud spinny-rattley noise. Still cleans great, but is getting very loud. I've taken it apart down to the motor and not found anything amiss. Could it be the motor and if so will I be able to find one?

There are many experts here to help with your troubles. I am a KitchenAid/Hobart guy (not by profession) but own and have owned quite a few.

Sounds like the plastic disc (Slinger) on top of the motor shaft to deflect the water should the seal leak has come loose.

I believe the most proper way to repair it is to replace the motor.

But the Experts will be here before long, so expect some brilliant solutions coming up for your problem.

Hey Toploader, thanks! I remember a steel piece on top of the motor shaft, is the plastic part you're talking about under that piece?

Here is a link from our Dr. Bombay of the Intergalactical Cosmos of Hobart/ KitchenAid.

He describes the "Slinger" as the Cooling Fan on top of the motor. Now he is talking about the 21 series here. You have a 22. I have never owned anything newer than a 20 series... So, other experts will be chiming in shortly.

KUDM220T2 dates to the early 1990s, not 1976.  I bought a KUDS220T4 in January of 1992.

Noisy KD 22 DW

It could be a loose cooling fan on top of the motor or bad motor bearings. If you take the pump impellers off the motor shaft and run the motor you will be able to tell if you still have the noise, you have a bad motor. If the plastic cooling fan is loose on the motor shaft you can remove the motor from the DW and epoxy the fan back in place on the motor shaft.

Thanks guys! Dado, that's very interesting, I'd assumed the machine was much older. We bought the house in '93 so it must have been a recent install. I'll take another look with the new info in mind and let you guys know what I find.

WHirlpool giveaway!

If you have any Kitchenaid Dishwasher and the model number has a "U" in it like the one mentioned above, then it is a Whirlpool produced unit. They added the "u" into the model numbers. Hobart never had that model nomenclature. So once the sale was finalized you can assume that the machine is at least from 1986. Also, look at the front cross member and look for a small sticker with numbers on it. It will tell you the day of the year and year it was built.

And as John said, you can repair a loose cooling fan by using the epoxy on it. The plastic fans did not rot away like the early Hobart built motors on the 15 thru 17 series. But the plastic ones would split and then make noise.

So in light of this being a Whirlpool made unit, is it still as desirable? I have a line on a free parts machine if it's worthwhile. It's a bit of a drive so if it's "just an old dishwasher" I won't bother.

If it's still in good shape inside and out (and the outside sure appears to be) and it's worked well for you all these years and continues to, then repairing it should be worthwhile. I think these were still good machines. We had a similar KA from 1990 growing up that was heavily abused and fell apart after 15 years so I can't speak much about them in my own experience as it was in an abusive environment.

These are still worlds better than anything built in the last several years...

Your model is the same one my friends parents had in their house. It was probably from about 1993 or so...in black. I wouldn't be surprised if they still have it. lol. Even being made by Whirlpool, those machines are tanks. They kept the same basic design with a few changes here and there, but still very much the Hobart machines. If you can fix it, I'd say do it.
