Hi! I have a chance to pick up this dishwasher. I can see it's an older KitchenAid and I'm not sure if it's one of the good ones made by Hobart. Could I get some help dating it? Thank you so much.

KitchenAid dishwasher KUDM 220t1

This dishwasher was designed by Hobart, but whirlpool had taken over completely by the time the 22s came out and had made several good improvements to it, but it certainly is a Hobart design if that's what you're looking for..

The 21 and 22 series dishwashers had good performance and good loading flexibility, other dishwashers had surpassed their performance by this time, Maytag whirlpool and the top-of-the-line GE's all actually cleaned better, but the KitchenAid was no slouch and if you're not looking for the maximum Cleaning ability, you may be quite happy with the KitchenAid one of the big failings of this KitchenAid series from the 21 on is it only had one final rinse.

The good thing about this dishwasher is it had better build quality than anybody else and there are more parts around for them than any of the other three that I just mentioned at this time so if the dishwasher is in good shape, you may be able to use it for many years.

Good to know

Thanks so much for the detailed answer. I'm sick and tired of dishwashers breaking down every year. I cook from scratch for a family of 10 so I need something with some pull and I think I'm going to give this one a try.

There are a few common wear parts that are getting tricky to find on these older dishwashers. The 4163370 screen mesh filter/upper wash arm support has been one of them for around 10 years. Take a look at the machine carefully, look for rust in the sump area of the tub. Remove the wash arm (it pulls straight up, no fastener) and check the condition of the fine mesh screen. A lot of them are torn, if not completed deteriorated and missing. Also check the upper wash arm support bearing and wash arm bearing for wear. The screen/support looks like this:

Dishwashers this old usually have hard water deposit buildup on the screen inside the water valve, causing them to underfill (these dishwashers are timed filled) reducing performance. It's best to just replace them during installation process. Otherwise, they wash great and FAST but are very noisy by todays standards, so be prepared for that.

Good to know. It's actually an everyday use and the owner is replacing because they don't like the loud noise

Works great

My grandmom had the kitchenaid 1 model below yours. Hers was the bottom of the line. It was purchased in 1992. They work great and quickly. Make sure your hot water is HOT. Mine is set to about 145. As far as detergent, these don’t work well with pods, they produce too many suds. I’ve had the best luck with cascade or great value plain powder detergent. Don’t rinse your dishes. Scrape and load.

This model is much simpler than most other Kitchen-Aids with the rapid advance meaning there is much less to go wrong. If this dishwasher was used light to moderately it is definitely worth it. Blower assisted dry, great particle elimination and many water change outs pre main wash make this machine great for heavily soiled loads.

Only down side is as others have said the main wash is only about 10 minutes long- which means 150*F hot water at the tap and powder detergent.

Here is the cycle sequence chart if interested:

KitchenAid panels color

Pods never work as well for me anyways. Curious, is this one of the models you can flip the panel for another color?

KitchenAid dishwasher front panel colors

This model does have reversible panels. It would definitely have black and white or black and almond. There may be an additional set of panels behind the ones you see, and they would either be white and harvest, gold or almond and harvest gold, depending on the other set of panels.

You can also remove the panels and install any custom panels you want in this dishwasher that are a quarter inch thick or less.

One way of getting around the one after rinse situation with these machines is to augment the one quart purge after the main wash. I would fill a one gallon bowl with scalding water which I would add to the machine after the one quart fill for the purge was complete. I would then open the door and pour the hot water in then restart the cycle. The drain after the purge was sufficient to pump out the additional water I added. The final rinse with the rinse agent went on to completion and was enough to prevent the destruction of the vinyl coating of the racks that was seen in so many of these machines after a few years of use.
