KitchenAid Trash Masher -- How Old?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

In these days of separating recyclables from garbage, and with more cities (at least around here) requiring separation of compostable material, the need for a trash masher seems to be less and less important.

Personally, I'd rather have the extra bit of cabinet space.

I've had a (GE) compactor / masher in the house since moving in 19 years ago (new at that time). We used it for trash at first, but shifted to using it only for recyclables some years ago. I only occasionally "mash" the recyclables. On the plus side, the replaceable bag stays clean and only gets replaced about every 2 years.

Had one of those growing up, most everything went in, except cans.  Big burner, lots of fire brick on the interior, ours had a timer on it, think it went as long as 30 minutes though I recall we mostly set it for 15 minutes. It was OK but we still had to haul the ashes out of the basement.

An outdoor burn barrel would be nice also.  When my wife's late uncle still lived on his farm we would take stuff out there to be burned in his barrel every so often.

When I was a kid we had a trash burner. It was a simple round cage of galvanized steel wire. Most people in our neighborhood had them, though a couple used an old steel drum. Once in a while the fire would get out of the burner, and set the yards on fire. Usually a hose was kept hooked up outside that would reach that part of the yard, so it could be put out quickly.
