I got the agitator off & now I'm trying to remove the tub nut. Was curious if this has a snap ring or if I just need to try & get it to break loose. I tried with the proper tool but to no avail. Are there any tricks?

Yes there are replacements. You may have to cut it off but if you do you have to be very careful not to damage the top lip of the wash basket that the tub nut seats against. Let it soak overnight with a good penetrant spray.

Great news, after a few days of soaking & hitting with a hammer & the tool, the nut is off. Now is there a trick to getting the tub out? I tried pulling it up & I see it move a bit but not anymore. I'm guessing after years of being together, it is going to be tough. After this I believe I can do the work to fix my leaks!
Thanks

See reply #13 in the thread below.

Just wanted to say I did try getting in & rocking & nothing. I used a strap & a wood board & it still didn't budge. Any more tips? I'm not missing anything after I get the nut off? It technically should pull up?

All I can say is these are the joys of rebuilding an antique washer. The positive side is when you get it nicely rebuilt to be dependable again all of the stubbornness of the machine not wanting to come apart makes the reward so much greater.

I just dealt with this on the 34 year old KitchenAid I just got. The spanner nut took a while of tapping but finally got it off, only to find that the basket and drive bell were practically fused together. Spent hours last night periodically squirting Bolt-Off and hitting all over with a rubber mallet, pulling every which way, rocking as much as I could while worrying I might damage the frame or suspension in the mean time. I continued today with the same treatment, but what finally got it loose was combo52's advice on an old thread of screwing the spanner nut back on about halfway, pulling up on the basket while hitting downwards against the nut with the hammer, until suddenly the sound of the pings changed, and at the point it wiggled and I was able to pull it out. I had already bought a new spanner nut and the wrench for cheap, so I wasn't concerned about damaging the nut at that point.

Getting a wash basket unstuck on a belt drive whirlpool

Hi Kyle, I’ve never had standing in the basket and rocking your weight from side to side not get a tub loose in just a few moments. How much Do you Do you weigh?

If you’re over 100 pounds I can’t imagine it not working. I only weigh 140 or so. You basically just stand and shift all your weight from your left foot to your right foot two or three times hold onto something on the ceiling to stabilize yourself so you don’t fall.

This only works on belt drive machines. The suspension is different on the direct drive machines and the technique that Andrew used in reply number 11 is better for a direct drive washer.
