After having a pretty nice LCD monitor for about a year now I have switched over to using the DVI input from the computer to the monitor. The difference is amazing. It's now a digital connection.

The picture on the monitor is so much sharper and clearer and it seems faster as well. I have seen a lot of people with LCD monitors who are still using a VGA cable. I wonder if they know that the digital connection is available?

Anyone here experience this?

Yes. A glitch I found is that the monitor won't go to "sleep" for power saving on the DVI connection. Possibly a limitation of my video card & driver. Some of the monitor's onboard picture settings such as horizontal & vertical position are also disabled, which are then controlled directly by the digital signal.

I'm using the onboard Intel video with 224MB and an ADD2 card.
So far, I have control over the screen settings and refresh speeds. I am using a Viewsonic VX1932wm monitor.

Have you checked to see that your monitor drivers are loaded in Windows? Previously mine was just a "plug & play" monitor, but I downloaded the latest monitor drivers from Viewsonic. That really helped.

What took you so long?

Did that 4 + years ago and noted on this board within the last two years.

Now the real fun begins when you have a updated PC that has a HDMI adapter which now allows you to plug into the big 52" or 46" screen like I have and really see the web in high definition.
The WHOLE screen is true real estate!

P.S. You do not have to get monster cables to get the best signal, cheapy will do just fine....

So true, but the MFG of LCD/LED should recommend such a upgrade for better performances.
While you at it, adjust "clear type" to further enhance reading pleasures.

Windows 7 it's under Fonts.
XP and Vista I think it's under "Display," I may be wrong,

You are right about the mfgs of the monitors not promoting it. My user manual just states that DVI inputs are there if your computer supports them. That's all it says.
And for best results you have to load the correct driver for your monitor for the best picture.

Way back in 1994 I saw Bill Gates speak at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. One of the points of his speech was that he thought the direction of future computing will be the combination of the web and television. On demand television viewing via the internet.
Well, we are just about there.

Web and Television

In some way we are there. ATT Uverse is delivered via the web. It's proprietary, but it's still basically a web stream. I'vew been using it for a few months along with my Directv but I'm soon to cancel Uverse. Mainly got it because I wanted a boost in internet speed. For $5 mo. more I doubled my speed from 3m to 6m.

As to cables, the best place to get them is www.monoprice.com great stuff at great prices. I needed an HDMI to DVI cable, Best buy $49.00, monoprice $3.29! All my flatscreen tvs are hanging on their mounts too. My 50" plasma is using their $18 mount whre in all the retail stores similar mounts run upward of $100+.

It's here

There are sites like Hulu which you can stream from your PC to either an XBox360 or right to the TV itself.

Vizio has TV that connects to the internet which connects to all the TV on Demand sites as well as Youtube.

My one complaint about XBox is NO WEB BROWSER? WTF? Microsoft makes the thing and they can't put IE on it?

I'm so glad I read this.

I just checked the back of the LCD monitor that I purchased about a year ago and yes, my monitor has this DVI connection. However, I'm not sure it will connect to my old tower. Also, my laptop has a special connection along with a special cable that I can hook up to my LCD TV in my bedroom. However, I can't seem to get it to connect. I put the TV on PC channel, but nothing happens. Any suggestions?

DVI to VGA adapter

Someone gave us a recently new HP Vista desktop which has a VGA port beneath a plastic cover thats screwed on because it has a HDMI/DVI card. Had to go to Radio Shack to get a DVI to VGA adapter for about 15 dollars.

We unbox tons of both Apple and Dell branded equipment here at work. All of the Apple displays we buy have permanently connected DVI cables, so you have no choice but to use DVI.

The Dell displays all come with a VGA cable attached to a VGA port on the back. Even though there are almost always VGA and DVI, and sometimes even S-Video, RCA video and HDMI ports available, Dell insists in screwing a VGA cable onto each display and uses some sort of electric screwdriver make sure you can't take it off with your fingers. Which I must instruct techs to remove, discard, and use DVI or HDMI.

So, points to Dell for giving me a choice of connections. And BOO for ALMOST permanently attaching the lousiest-common-denominator.

And THATS how you end up finding a 20 year old, analog video connection standard being used to connect a widescreen 24" display in 2010.

/sigh/.
