Leather in the Washing Machine

Yes I have!

And oddly it works just fine. I have a black suede jacket that I toss in the Frigidaire FL, on the gentle cycle. I use Woolite, no fabric softer in the rinse. I do toss a softener sheet in the dryer with the jacket, on low heat. The jacket comes out just fine. I've cleaned the jacket that way several times and it still looks great.

Yes, I know that leather is generally washable - there are also special leather-detergents on the market. I have lots of leather stuff and know from some leather-addicts that they frequently wash their items in the FL and later give them a good wipe with leather-fat. But you must never put leather into a dryer! (maybe except suede - I don't know..)

I just have the machine set to ATC Warm water and cold rinse. The jacket I wash was a promo/give away bomber type. Meaning I'm not tossing a very expensive jacket in the washer. I do wash it by itself. The jacket is lined and in this case there was no bleeding of the dye into the lining.

What got me taking the chance with it was washing some dry clean only shirts in the machine. Again, on a gentle cycle. They came out just fine.

I've also successfull washed my leather topsiders and leather sneakers in there as well. Usually will include a towel or two so they don't clunk around too much. Then into the dryer on low or medium heat setting.

I have a client that has several of those sheepskin rugs and was horrified to find a cat she had been watching for a friend used a couple of them for a pee-stop. I suggested washing them in the washer - a T/L KitchenAid. She washed them in Woolite, gentle cycle with warm/warm temp. and they came out beautiful. She hung them over the deck rail to dry and then fluffed them in the dryer for a few minutes.

I have never tried other forms of leather but it makes sense, you see cows standing the rain all the time ;-) The softener is a great idea though, overdosing probably helps in this case.

I'm going to have to give this a shot. I have a leather jacket that should probably be cleaned, but the cleaners want a fortune for doing it.

It's a nice winter jacket, but it came from Montgomery Ward, which gives you a clue about the age and quality...

LOL

Oh good, now I can write a special cycle for the Super Unimatic to wash those tight leather chaps of mine, automatically of course.

Wash, rinse add condtioner

Wet cow. Maybe. But minks and lynx get wet too and fur coats of this origin should not get wet...

I agree, I'm thinking really greasy waxy softeners HELP the leather.

So maybe I should try my chaps, leather-shirts and jeans as well as jackets....
No nude is not best - leather on is best! tThere's nothing better for a real MAN!!

Going through the metal detector . . .

A few years ago my ex-bf and I went to IML in Chicago, and he packed a suitcase with 38 pounds of leather gear. Mostly rope, but also some chains, hooks, clamps of various sorts, etc., etc., etc.

At LAX checked luggage is left in a stack to be screened, which happens on the other side of a partition. We were a little apprehensive, so we loitered on the outside of the partition until we heard one of the handlers grunt as he picked it up, and then the metallic tinkle of the chains as it was loaded onto the conveyor. After a moment we didn't hear any commotion, and so figured it was OK. It arrived in Chicago just fine, but we always wondered what it must have looked like on the x-ray machine!

Ex-bf and I are still good friends, and while he doesn't put leather itself into the washer, he does find that the rope cleans up nicely when put into a mesh sack and run through the gentle cycle on his KitchenAid top loader.

Uh-hu.... I never knew some of this existed until last weeks bear run... I now know how to wash it.
Lawdy...
I will stick with my shoez, purses and belts... Oh and maybe a nice jacket for the rain or something..
