Hello all

My aunts Hotpoint WMA76 (silver) had it's bearings gone after 7 years with approximately minimum 3 washes and maximum 5 washes a day. A lot of washing and no repairs in 7 years, pretty impressive

Now, I had the task of choosing the new one, it had to be big, with features like pre wash, child lock etc etc.

They wanted a black washing machine as they are soon getting the matching dryer when the hotpoint ultima tcd60 pakcs up which was bought as a pair with washing machine.

We decided on the LG steam 9kg in black, as we wanted a machine with steam.

I started the first wash as we had about 4 to do on the first day! It was cottons 40oc with time save and max spin (1400). It was virtually silent, except when draining and filling which wasn't loud an all. Everyone was impressed especially with the steam function and 6 motion wash system

I couldn't take any videos, unfortunately. however I had my phone with me so took some pictures

BTW- got it on 23/12/10 which was in time for xmas nice pressie for aunt haha

very similait to my swan (daewoo) 9kg steam washer i got a few months back and its great. nice big drum. i got it thinking i would do less wash loads a day and now i find i do more lol. i can get king size duvets in. curtains even the huge rug in the living room

like the LG mine has the direct drive and its so quiet you can barely hear it. even on spin you can hear it a little and it sounds like a plane engine when on 1400 rpm

good luck with the machine, i have heard nothing but good comments about the model you have bought

Yeah it is amazingly quiet, and my aunt managed to get in a lot of clothes and we've only got postive things to say. Lets hope it lasts a long time and serves the household well.

Dumb question; is 24" / 600mm width standard in the UK?

In trying to compare you new LG machine to my new WM2501HVA steam washer here in the USA, I found yours is 600mm wide; ie about our 24 inches. Here a 24 inch machine is not normal; most all are 27" wide. A narrower 24" machine is usually not in stock; more like special order.

This in looking at LG's UK site; many machines are 24" width; is this the standard width of a washer in the UK

European appliances are generally designed to be modular and fit into kitchen or utility room cabinets and standardised slots. So, they are usually 850mm high, and 595 - 600mm wide.

However, there can be huge differences in the depth of European washers. They create extra capacity usually by using deeper cabinets and slanted drums.

You can buy oversized machines e.g. some of the really big Bosch, Whirlpool and LGs, however most people just find them a bit of a pain in the rear as you need to re-organise your utility room. This has generally meant that most people prefer the deeper cabinet designs that conform to standard width and height.

E.g. Bosch logix 8 is 590mm deep, Hotpoint-Ariston Aqualtis 9kg is 645mm deep!
Small zanussi machine is only 515mm deep.

There's a big difference.

24 and 27" washers

Here in the USA washers are typically the standard 27" width; ie about 69cm.

The 1976 FL Westinghouse here is 27" wide and its depth is 25" / 64 cm

The 2010 FL LG washer here is 27" wide and its depth is more, ie 31" / 79cm.

The wash-basket-drum in both machines is the same diameter, about 25 inches 635mm. The basket is about 11 to 12 inches deep in the 1976 model and about 18 " deep in the 2010 model. To get a larger capacity, they do the same as Europe, the washer is made deeper too.

A 24" / 610 mm wide washer available in the USA, but few buy them. One basically pays more for a smaller washer for a cabin or small condo. There is little production volume so there is very little pricing wars with a 24" model. If I asked 100 folks about their washer, a good bet is none would own a 24" model. Some of ave a smaller us would actually prefer washer. My new 2010 LG is about 50 percent larger than the 1976 washer. I really do not need this big a washer, it is just to buy a smaller washer costs more and will maybe be a SOB for parts later since it is a freak palty production run. It is sort of like if you buy a weird car or motor bike that only 1 in 500 folks own.

My Goof about the basket diameter

The spin basket on a 27" frame FL washer here is about 22" in diameter; ie about 56cm.

The 25" basket diameter is what a DRYER with a 27" frame uses; thus I goofed.

Both my 1976 and 2010 FL washers here in 27" wide frames have washer spin baskets that are 22" diameter; ie about 58cm.

The only thing standard about that width outside of North America.

It is not 'the standard' as such anywhere else, especially for front load machines.

We have access to LG/Samsung's large 27" machines here, but most if not all other manufacturers that sell in our market, sell 24" machines. Large frame i.e. 27" machines, are not popular here compared to the European norm of 24" machines.

Much of the 'size' issue originally relates back to the size of cabinets used in kitchens and laundry rooms. The vast majority of cabinets used are available in 30/45/60cm (12/18/24") widths straight 'off the shelf' so it made sense to have machines that could be 'fitted'. Australia, and many other countrys, have followed the European norm with kitchen and laundry cabinets and, as a result, with front-load machines too.

With the increase in kitchen and laundry renovations and the purchase of front load machines in this country now out-selling top load, people design their rooms to be sleek and contempory and thus often build in their washer under the bench. Given that our cabinets follow the European norm, people purchase a machine to fit - 24"

On the other hand, there seems to be no standard what so ever for top load machines....Every thing from 55cm to 67cm is available...

Switzerland, another exception

Swiss norms for kitchen cabinets do have 55 cm wide built in appliances in order to protect local manufacturers from the rest of the world.

So swiss made diswashers - V-Zug Adora [check link], Schulthess and Merker - come in both 55 and 60 cm sizes.

These 55cm wide DWs are often used in other european cuntries as wall mount models, cause they fit in 60 cm wide column cabinets, just like (euro) standard size wall ovens [ e.g. REX-Electrolux TTC 1000 : http://www.electrolux-rex.it/Products/Lavastoviglie/Incasso/Integrate_totali/TTC1000 ]

In the USA a dishwasher is often placed under the kitchen counter, ie a "built in design" . The unit has typically only the front side finished, all other 5 sides are rough. A standard width is 24"; 18" is available but rare. A giant dishwasher is often 30" wide and is rarer too. By "built in" the hole is standard, one just buys another places it in the same hole under the counter.

Most all washers in the USA are 27" wide today, the sales of 24" models is probably less than 1 in 100, maybe greater than 1 in 1000 is my guess.

Eons ago in FL USA washers the width was often 30 or 31" in Westinghhouses. Somewhere in the later 1950's or early 1960,s the 27" smaller westinghouse FL washer came out. A small 25" wide Westinghouse FL 25" SpaceMates came out about 1955.

Bendix had a variant of their FL washer in the 1940's that was small enough to go under kitchen counter.

For the most part most Americans did NOT use a FL washer until 5 or 10 years ago, us long term home FL washer users (pre say 1995) are probably a PERCENT OR LESS. The average JOE used a TL washer thus they could not fit in a slot with a shelf right above the unit.
