So I think with part of my income tax return, we're going to buy a new front loader. Our Whirlpool TL does fine, but our water rates are going up quite a bit this year. Even our meter rate went from $1/mth to $18/mth...just to have a meter! So I think its time to be a little bit more energy conscious. So I wanted some input from you guys that have experience with the LG brand. This on that I have picked out is right in my price range, and is really the only one in this price range with 4.0 cu.ft. Pros/Cons? Thanks for any info!

I would never buy another LG product - service is very bad. But being it is through sears it may be better. FYI I have a friend that has this same machine and the water usage is to little. The clothes don't get rinsed out good with one of these monsters. It would be like going from one extreme to another. I am at the point where I would rather buy Non energy savings products that get the job done right!

Thanks for that bit of info! So what problems have you had with your LG? I do purchase alot of my things through Sears, since they are 3 miles down the road from me. And the Sears store here in my town actually has a good reputation for coming right out when there is a problem, and they really try to make good when something hasn't been resolved quickly. I can't afford a Miele, so I'm just trying to start somewhere with a brand. Samsung has caught my attention also. It seems that Whirlpool/Kenmore/Frigidaire haven't had very good reviews.

I had a LG combo a few years back and to make a long story real short I couldn't get service. (U can check LG Service Nightmare in google) u can read my story.
I do recommend U give the Frigidaire a chance U get a lot of bang for the buck. The Samsung from what I have seen is excellent but more pricy. But remember they are all to stingy with water and the cycle times R much longer. The other bad thing about LG is it takes forever to go into a spin. (a lot of time wasted) - keep us posted.

Er...

...have your water costs gone up? unless there is something drastically wrong such as a leak, it would be very hard to explain unless you are paying more for a given amount...
 
I had 2 of them here also

and with out a doubt they were the WORST machines I have ever had in 45 +years. When they did work which was seldom they did a nice job for us. but Service was worse than awful. Maybe now with sears it is better but I am another one that will NEVER EVER buy ANY LG products again Life is Good for them but they make it hell for everyone else.
 
So does...

...that water usage include any garden area? 'cause that's a fair old whack of water for 1 person...

Just wondering as we tend to use around 3/4 of that for 2 people and a garden...
 
That would be high for us...but then it may be normal for those that live around you for example...all depending on the toilet cistern, shower rose etc....
 
13.000 gallons is 50.000 litres, that's what we use in 80 days, in a house of 4 people! And, mind it, we all shower everyday! Our last bill was for 64 cubic metres of water in 100 days.
 
If you have the room, why not find a good, used top loader to put next to yours? If you could reuse the wash water even once, you could wash 2 loads with half the heated water used by your top loader and have faster cycling time than with a new front loader. You just add half as much detergent for the second load to keep the soil suspended. Generations grew up doing that with wringer washers and later, sudssaver washers and, ulike with a sudssaver washer, the water won't have to sit and cool while the first load finishes the rinsing and spinning. You will still get great washing and probably better rinsing than with most front loaders. Water extraction would be the only way the top loaders would fall short. It will take some planning to have two loads to wash together. If you use bleach in the wash, it would have to be two loads of whites and you would have to be near the machine to switch the drain hose back to the stand pipe or tub after the wash drain, but you are wanting to save money. A set of Y connectors for your faucets would be all you would need. As you said, your WP top loader is doing fine and if space is not an issue, you could save water on the cheap without the issues so many have with new front loaders. PLUS, you would always have a spare!
 
Larry, 12-13K gallons every three months? That works out to be 4K gallons a month average. To me, that's a huge amount for one person. In the winter time when I don't have to water the yard, I average between 1400 and 2000 gallons. With the old LK Shredmore it was about 200 gallons a month more. My next door neighbors are retired elderly and they use no more than 3000 gallons a month at the most, I've asked cuz I was curious.
 
Larry, I work with someone whose water use jumped for several months and it was discovered there was a leak in the water main just past their curb. Other possibility: Meter is malfunctioning. Third possibility: You use a LOT of water, LOL!
