Lid Crud

I've noticed, in the two months that I've owned this Speed Queen 432, that an old issue has returned: dirt and crud on the inside of the lip lip but also around the recess where the lid resides. Of course, since my last two machines were FL's I didn't have this, replaced with other problems, unfortunately.

I know in those 25 years or so with Filter-Flo machines I used to get it also. It wasn't/isn't liquid, but is rather like a granular type of dirt. I was always anal about cleaning it out of the GE machines, and I'm doing it now with this one.

Where does that dry dirt come from? Does it waft up from the washing? Certainly, if I lift the lid during washing, it's not splashing up there as some old TL's did.

I've always assumed it was calcium/mineral buildup from hard water. Its something I've only really noticed with Speed Queen, especially when visiting the laundromat. The commercial machines had black inside the lid and every machine was always covered in a white circle on the underside of the lid. The only way they could remove it was with a limeaway/ bathroom cleaner that takes away the minerals. I've also noticed the lid to always be wet when I am finished using a Speed Queen. Not sure if it is spray when washing or the spin rinse splashing around.

I don't have hard water. It sounds like you and I are talking about different things. What I'm talking about, I've on basically every top loader I've looked at after some history. It's dirt--dark, going around the bleach and/or softener corners, on the area where the hinges are, etc.

Go looking on YouTube or anywhere with un-cleaned washers and you'll see it. Certainly I had to clean my 3 Filter-Flo sets the very same way.

I have seen that buildup and not sure what it is, it looks like dirt almost. Unfortunately it seems to cause rusting along the edges of the lid if not kept clean.

BTW... not one of my machines.

I think it's just misty soiled water. Like not a direct splash but just a mist or a steam/condensation soil that when the lid is opened dust in the air (lint probably as well) it will stick to the moist surface and just build up lightly over time.
