My friend Elizabeth years ago called me wanting a dishwasher recommendation... I said Maytag... I think it would a couple of years after I got my Maytag so that would make it about 2016 (give or take) when she got this. She then text me recently asking me the same thing. I'm like, "What's wrong with yours?" She said the paint is peeling... otherwise it works fine...I thought she was being dramatic because of a little paint .. then she sent me a pic... but look at this... What the he!!?

That looks like it needs more than a touch up! No matter how skilled you are with appliance touch up paint that DW is gonna look like crap just using touch up paint.

It needs to go to an Auto Body paint shop for the whole door to be sanded and repainted.

I wonder what caused that? If it's something the user is doing or it would have happened anyway? I don't know. I've never had that happen to me personally. My previous Whirlpool dishwasher had a defect from the factory where the control panel wasn't glued in all the way and it kept popping out a corner of it... annoyed me for years...

To me... It almost looks like something acidic... I wonder if when she cooks she opens the dishwasher with food hands on that corner and may not get it wiped off good and over time it just eats that away?

It happened with GE Artistry too

I recently replaced ours with a Bosch that is stainless steel outside. Paint on GE peeled near the vent.

Given how the door is shaped and looking at the counter top above, I wouldn't be surprised it's just an area she goes to much.
Cutlery drawer or such next to it, brushing up against it.

Further it appears that continues under the top part which would be a plastic control panel most likely.
Once paint is nicked, it'll keep peeling of bit by bit.
I don't even think it's corroded much - rust would usually look more uneven. Maybe just a black base coat.

Depending on her level of handiness and perfectionism I guess there are 3 options as to what to do.
First is just a white paint pen or such to blend it in.
Second would be the replacement panel mentioned above.
Third would be to just leave it. If it's out of sight out of mind I wouldn't bother.

Otherwise yeah a whole replacement machine might be in order unfortunately if she is very particular about such stuff.

She sent me 3 more pics...but a better vantage point.... Um, the first pic looked so much worse than it actually is.... she's still not happy about it though... Looking at these different angles I'd definitely do touch ups...so that's what I told her...as long as the dishwasher itself is functioning properly which she says it is.

Rusty front panel on a Maytag dishwasher

We have seen this happen on many brands of dishwashers, including Bosch when you have a very humid kitchen and you don’t keep things clean this can happen to any dishwasher. We see it all the time.

I suspect humidity and cleaning procedures are not ideal in this kitchen.

Dishwashers no longer have stainless steel front panels even if it has that look it’s just a coating on a steel panel and they will rust around the edges as well if they’re not well cared for.

The best thing to do would be to replace the entire panel, although it would be fairly expensive touch up would be a good way to hide it as it won’t affect the dishwasher performance.
