It seems as though these are starting to show up in the used market more often, so those of us who have always wanted one but were turned off by the price point of a new model can finally get one.

This showed up in the same used appliance store where I found the direct drive I linked a few weeks ago. Obviously my Maytag 112 is still going so I decided not to purchase that machine. But this place seems to have a heck of a lot of options at a price most anyone can afford, so it's good to know I'll be covered if my current machine craps out. I feel a lot better about it.

Have you considered a late model orbital trans Maytag washer? Same platform as your A112 but with a short stroke trans, load sense agitator and large capacity tub.

I got one for some friends after the used SQ washer I fixed them up with died after a couple of years, (slow spin, clothes were wet and heavy).

The MT has been running strong for a few years now.

My A112 still runs. I was just commenting on the fact that used SQ models with the mechanical timer seem to be getting more plentiful. I know a lot of people, myself included, wanted them when other brands ditched their mechanical designs for more electronics-oriented platforms, but most couldn't afford them. A used SQ seems to knock the price point down considerably.

Or are you saying you would not recommend a used SQ?

And yes, if I had to get another washer, I would consider one of the later Maytags as an option certainly. I know parts for them are still moderately plentiful so I can probably find someone to repair it relatively easily should something go wrong. I'd either do that or a direct drive Whirlpool-made machine. The only modern machines I consider to be any good are the Speed Queen TC5 or a decent front loader like an LG, both of which I would have trouble affording easily. The VMW washers with the duel-action agitators are okay, but they don't tend to last long.

you would not recommend a used SQ?

I just had a bad experience with a used SQ, seemed to me it died before it's time, but was in good shape otherwise.

The Maytag that replaced it I picked up at an estate sale and was probably older than the SQ but it's been trouble free since the day it was installed several years ago (and they're not people who are easy on their appliances).
