I hurried over to pick up this free GE washer & dryer that I saw on Craigslist in the middle of the thousand other things to do before leaving for the wash-in today so I snapped some quick pics for you guys to see it. Yes, it's almond - Austin's favorite! I'm giving it to a good friend of ours, her daughter will take it in May for an apartment at college in Wyoming. I haven't had a chance to clean or test it, we'll do that when we come home next week.

BTW

I would post pictures of the dryer but it's already on it's way to China, crushed into a bale of other scrap metal to be used for exciting "Watch for falling prices" merchadise at WalMart. Erica didn't need it, I didn't need it so it didn't even get to come home.

I did keep all the books and documemtation though, the original owners kept everything - even the stickers from the top of the the machines!

Look at what else was in with the GE literature. This must have been what the GE's replaced. I wish they were still there!

GE--the perfect jeans washer!

Great catch Greg! I bet it will look like new after it's all cleaned up. But almond is hardly my favorite, eeeeeeeeeeeeeek! ;-)

I've never seen a hole pattern like that before, very interesting. The '77 Dispensall had a more 'standard' pattern when I found it. The later 18 lb. str8-vane Activator with the half-vanes at the base can really move the load; the turnover is mindboggling, especially considering how wide the vanes are. Although it still doesn't beat the ramp!

And I see it has the 'deep dish' fabric softener dispenser, very nice. I have the smaller version and it's fun to watch it swirl into the outer 'bowl' during spin but I heard this was more dramatic. And this is the second machine I've seen where the recirculation nozzle was installed upside down. Some people, I tell ya...

Hey Greg!
Looks like a pretty nice machine for your friends daughter. Way to go snagging onto it! <:

That's the slightly newer model than the one I had. This one shown also has the continuous spin-spray PP cool down, not the partial drain & fill like mine had.

Very nice GE. My great aunt had that exact model years ago. I only saw it once, and only because i snuck off to check it out in the basement. I remember the lack of holes in the tub...I thought it was odd. My sister's Filter Flo has that deeper FS dispenser. Works pretty well. The filter flo stream hits directly onto the outside of it, with all of its force. It looks like it would almost flood out the inside...but it just hits and gushes right back into the filter pan. I have never noticed anymore than a drop or 2 getting inside the actual dispenser. Those GE folks sure knew what they were doing!! LOL. What year ya'll reckon this is??

Great Washer!!

Looking at the pics...it looks like the filter flo nozzle is upside down? This machine will clean up nicely and continue to be a workhorse for years to come.

Lack of basket holes

I've got some GE info from the 70's that speaks to reduced number of basket holes. It states something to the effect that with fewer holes, there was less likelyhood of polka-dot like spots & streaks on forming on dark color fabric. The water was forced up & out of the top basket holes instead of through the sides etc. This was a result of the awful no phosphate detergents that available at the time.

OK - so here's the deal. Picked up my new GE WWA8470VCLAD from that house that recently sold. It looks very much like the one Greg posted earlier - with the white straight vane activator. However, you can toggle the wash and spin speeds separately and the tub has the more regular hole pattern. Not sure of the age - I am figuring late 70's - serial number is TF151878G

I guess it was in a bit rougher shape than originally thought. There is a bit of rust at the very bottom of the machine along the edge - seems unusual since it was in a main floor laundry room. Also there is a disturbing amount of rust on the back bottom of the lid as well as around the underside of the loading port near the filter flo spout and pretty much all around the rim where the metal meets the rubber gasket. I thought that may have been due to leaving the lid closed all the time - common habit for those with main floor laundries. So I guess I will need a new top and lid. I know those exist somewhere. Anyone know where?

I haven't taken the back off yet but I see black spots at the bottom of the board covering the back. I suspect that may mean a new transmission is in order.

The inner tub seems rust free and I will report further when I lift the top - hopefully no outer tub rust.

In addition to my other questions, I was curious as to whether one could swap out the white straight vane for the earlier blue one on that machine?
