For those of you who enjoy geological events, here is one to keep your eye on. Seems like the Big Island of Hawaii has been rockin' and rollin' for the past day. I have been watching my own homemade seismometer (two "likker" bottles on top my 'fridge) but there has been no action here on Maui. The eggheads (scientists) think a new lava vent may be opening up and the earthquakes are caused by all the magma trying to bubble up.

I'm cool with that as long as it stays over on the Big Island. I do not care to find out if I can outrun a lava flow. Might be a good idea to get some gin and tobacco as an offering to Madame Pele (she likes to have a good time!)

I visited the Big Island arond 1991, and enjoyed my visit to Kilauea. I recall walking through an old overgrown lava tube in the park, although I'd been warned that there was a somewhat unpredictably hostile woman who had taken up residence there and would occasionally harass tourists. I imagine a lot of that area - or at least some of the roads I traveled - are now under lava rock. The caldera was an incredible sight - even from a distance above. We truly live on an amazing planet.

PS-What magnitude were the quakes? Stuff 4 and under doesn't bother me. 5 and above, that's when it tends to get interesting.
