On clearance, I bought this dutch oven. Perfect size. I loved it. The first time I used it, I warmed it up on the burner and fried some meatballs. Then continued making the dish, and put it in the oven. When I cleaned it out, a huge chunk of the porcelain came off! Today, I tried using it again, for the second time, and as I was heating the oil up in it on the burner (on medium) it made a popping sound, and sure enough, more porcelain came off. This is the first time I have had problems with her stuff from KMart, but it really bugs me!! I can send it to Gibson Overseas for warranty replacement, but it's gonna cost $20 bucks or so in shipping. What a rip!!

Sorry you got suckered

I take it this is porcelainized cast iron? There is an art to making it and it cannot be an inexpensive process because unless it is done right, it self destructs. The metal has to be pickled properly for the porcelain to fuse to it. Other factors are involved also like making the porcelain formula properly. I would maybe trust Lodge to do this right, but would not waste time or money on Chinese s**t. Have you gone online to find others with the same problem? I'll bet if you raise enough hell with KMart HQ, you will be allowed to return it. Start screaming about health concerns and stuff. Post a clip on Youtube with the same words in the title as your post here so that it will be widely available or go to the Garden Forum (?) cookware area and post something with graphic pictures. Don't get mad; get even. Write Martha. Post on her website. Send a copy to the food editor of your paper, to KMart HQ and to consumer advocates at TV stations. Enclose high quality graphic pictures.[this post was last edited: 5/3/2010-06:43]

Lodge porcelain cast iron-

While the regular Lodge Logic cast iron is still made here in the States, the Lodge porcelain cast iron is from China.

The only answer (in my opinion) is to wait for sales on Le Crueset (or Staub), or look for it at tag/estate sales.

Not all Chinese made goods are crap, but some are.

Too bad about your Martha pot.

LeCrueset...there is no substitute for perfection!!

There are LeCrueset factory outlet stores all over the place...check them out for some serious discount prices. I bought my 9 quart LeCrueset oven for $129 there. All of my LeCrueset pieces have come from the Orlando factory outlet store...good selection of colors and styles, just many factory seconds. In most cases, the blemish isn't even visible. Never a single problem or complaint with any of them. I've gotten probably 12 pieces from that store over the last several years, plus a nice selection of their mixing bowls, ceramic baking dishes, etc. The mixing bowls are really nice, but some may find that they're just too damned heavy to move easily from cabinet to countertop.

I looked at the Martha Stewart Cast Iron also. It was already chipped on display. I think you get what you pay for.

I have the Le Creuset and love it. I save for it and buy a piece at a time. Great cookware.

Le Creuset!

I love Le Creuset! I have a number of pieces I bought; there is one of their outlets near me and you can find their "seconds" on great sales (and be careful because sometimes it is a cosmetic failure and sometimes it is more than that).

I won't buy any other porcelain cast iron as everything else I have seen is Chinese made. And y'all know that by now I won't buy China made goods especially to use with food!

The L.C. is awesome stuff. I love all that I've got. (I also have some pieces of lodge cast iron - the US made stuff - which is top notch though un-enameled.)

Hi Hunter. Nice to see another Le Creuset lover. It is great stuff. One of the many things I like about it is when you add the pasta to the boiling water, it does not stop boiling. This is what I have so far:

6 piece starter set in the color Dune.
9 qt Round Duth Oven in Dijon
11 3/4" skillet in Digon, ( the cover from the 9qt fits this).
7 1/4 qt Round Dutch Oven in the new Gloss Black.

I got my brother the large reversible grill/griddle. He loves it!

Looking the get the 5qt braiser in Red. And..a few silicone whisks and small au gratin dishes.

What pieces do you have?

Let's see...

I have a couple of roasting dishes (one more or less a 9x13 and one smaller), I have 2 dutch ovens (I can't remember the size) that are blue, another one larger that is green, and 2 saucepans.

Goodwill has been kind to me :)

I also have an orange L.C. type that is actually belgian that I bought at a junk store YEARS ago.

Since my wife has food allergies, we never use unenamelled cast iron pans as they absorb food and bother her. I use some ordinary cast iron for frying eggs and such.

Hunter, Nice Collection.

I have been saving Christmas, birthday money for awhile and use that to purchase. However, my wife and I belong to direct buy and save a lot on this stuff.

Have you used the Cleaner that they sell?

I'd like to echo that: Le Crueset...no substitute for pe

I also have some Le Crueset and love it! I had wanted some for a very long time and once I found the Le Crueset outlet store out near Palm Springs, I'd stop by and usually buy something on the way out or the trip back.

My first purchase (4-5 years ago) was a round 5 1/2 qt dutch oven (shaded blue). Other pieces include a 2 or 2 1/2 qt round dutch oven (yellow), a 5 qt braiser (green), a 4 3/4 qt wok (blue) and a 11"(?) DEEP sided, covered skillet (white). This skillet is 3" deep inside and with the high dome lid, can accommodate things 4 - 4.5" tall while covered!

The last few times I stopped in the outlet store, as much as I wanted to buy something, I just couldn't find anything I really needed (at a price I was ok with). I would like to get a 9 or 13 qt dutch oven, but the cost has prevented me thus far.

And yes, the "2nd's" are the way to go! All of my pieces are 2nd's and I've been very happy with them!

Allen, The savings are substantial. You pay for shipping and a small perdcentage for handling.. The percentage is usually 8%. On some items there is not handling fee.
