I just discovered this clip from the final episode of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and thought there might be some other Mary Tyler Moore fan-atics out there who would appreciate this as much as I did. I'm sure some of you, like me, even saw it during its first run, before reruns. Enjoy.

Robert S. I thought you, in particular, might like this.

Robert...

I know how much you like older sitcoms, we're also contemporaries and you live in Minneapolis. I figured I had a good shot that you were a fan of Mary's. (No pun intended...lol) My guess is that you, Greg N. and I have very similar taste and sensibilities. Greg and I have also been enjoying the first few seasons of Family. Also, do you have the first season of Hazel yet, that's out on DVD? That's another favorite show of mine.

Family was always one of my favorite shows!! I loved the house they lived in and wanted one just like it.LOL

I know Mike forgive me, I was being my silly self :)

Yes I've always loved Mary, the house that the opening scenes are shot in front of is here located, just west of downtown. There is even a TV Land statue of Mary at the corner where she threw her hat up. I think there are six total TV Land statues so far, the Bewitched Statue is located in Salem, MA and the Ralph Kramden statue is located in Brooklyn, NY.

I do have the Hazel DVD set, but I haven't watched it yet. I wonder if they show a washer and dryer in that show?

Why did Sada Thompson always look like she was on the verge of tears? Maybe it was her super shiny eyes, but it also had something to do with the way her features seemed a bit pinched upward like just before starting to cry. Maybe bad plastic surgery? I liked the laundry arrangement which at one time featured the Custom Imperial Frigidaire washer and the 29" Lady Kenmore Combo for a dryer or a washer-dryer. I liked the piano theme music also. Most of the story lines were not that gripping, for me.

Stove and Mixer in "Family"

I suspect that the stove on that show was a Magic Chef. I think it had two ovens, or one oven and broiler and a warming oven. The ovens were to the right of the cooktop. There was a pink model 12 mixmaster with a white large bowl. Willie used it in one episode to make cream puffs. The house was Doug's father's according to the story line. There were other small appliances on the counter, but don't recall what they were. There was an older mixmaster (mod. 9) in the kitchen of the cottage where Nancy lived behind the house.

One thing you can see on the MTM shows is the IDS building being built out of the window in her apartment. The IDS was the first tall building after the Foshay tower in MSP.

I think that the MTM show was way ahead of its time. It is a long time favorite of many people. It just doesn't seem to be on television all that often.

Thanks Mike

for reminding me to catch up on MTM dvd's. It was one of my favorite shows. As a kid I always imagined that i would have a cool apartment with a M on the wall. Sounds funny to say that out loud!

Does anyone know the connection between Hazel and Family? I just realized it when i saw the above photos of the DVD's.

Connection Between

I know the connection: One of the regulars on "Family" was played by Meredith Baxter--the daughter of "Hazel" co-star Whitney Blake.
BTW: Blake was the co-creator of "One Day At A Time;" and did you realize that Meredith's last name was the same as the name of the family Hazel worked for--the Baxters?
Yet another "Hazel" trivia note: Ford sponsored the series for much of its run; when Ford introduced the Mustang on an April night in 1964, it bought time on all three broadcast networks and aired the spot at the same time on ABC, CBS and NBC (the latter network aired "Hazel" at the time). Soon after, the Baxter family had a brand new Ford Mustang--at a time when people were waiting months to get one.

Thomas, I was just about to say the same thing.......

almost didn't recognize Sada in Mike's scan. Never saw her smile. She was so grim and serious and suffocating. I was always glad my mother wasn't like her. I probably would have turned out gay ;-D speaking of which, wasn't there a gay dude in the show? It was so long ago.

Like all of you, I used to laugh so hard at MTM's show--My God, it was hysterical!

And I LOVED Hazel, one of the sweetest women of all time. I think that Laundress is Hazel reincarnated.

Connection Between Hazel and Family

Mike S...

Thank you for sharing all that great trivia. I'm amazed at the wealth of knowledge people on this site have about pop culture (and everything else for that matter).

Mike S

You are correct about the Family/Hazel connection! I didn't know that Whitney Blake also co created One Day at a Time though!

I don't know about everyone else but i was a shy gay kid growing up so TV was my best friend, my escape. Maybe thats why I remember so much stuff!

Another funny Mary moment was when she got the giggles at Chuckles the Clown's funeral.

speaking of giggles

....a very similar event happened at my Grandmother's funeral. One of my cousins and I got tickled at something that was said. We had to leave the room, we were stifling laughter very poorly. When we left and went outside, my aunt came chasing after us to see why we were so upset....there was no way we could tell her we were laughing (you'd had to have been there to fully appreciate this, but to this day, my cousin and I still call each other if we see the MTM chuckles the clown episode.....)(the funeral was 2/78).....

Thank You

Thanks for the nice words, everybody; I'm glad I'm a part of this wonderful world--among others.
By the way, "Mary Tyler Moore" is among my favorite series of all time. ("A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants" and my favorite Rhodaism: "I've got to lose ten pounds by 8:30!") Here's proof of my love for Mary:

Great Review Mike...

Here's Ida, Alicia and Helen in a publicity shot. Those were the days. I had a great figure back then.

Hazel

Robert,
They do show appliances in Hazel. Stove/Oven,Refrigerator,Washing machine. As hard as I tried I can not make out the brands. You probably have a better eye for them then I. They also show an updated kitchen in just a couple of episodes. She is such a "doosey"! Let me know if you figure any of them out. I'm dying to know.... I think the fridge is a Westinghouse.

Family

The Family house exteriors and some interiors were shot in South Pasadena, CA., next street to my cousins house. I think it was Marengo off Huntington Drive near quiet but rich San Marino, where few tourists linger, unlike Bev Hills or the West side of LA. The home is there, and yes there is a guest house in the back. It is a gray shingled 20's home among much grander homes. South Pasadena is used a lot in movie shoots for neighborhoods because it lacks the ubiqutious transplanted palm trees and can look like a neighborhood in the east coast, mostly there are oaks and deador pines, which photograph as anytown USA.
