Maytag 101P

Thought I would start a new thread for the following questions I have on the Maytag automatic 101P I just won on E-bay.

1. Besides the obvious checking for shipping damage, what should be the first thing I do to this machine to determine what the problem is? The owners told me they were able to turn the machine on and fill it, but it would not advance into agitation OR to spin. Does this have to do with the mercury switch system in the lid?

2. Am I able to set up this machine in my garage for repair and restoration and use the garden hose to test to see if it works? How would I do that? Use two garden hoses ... one for hot, one for cold?

I'll take any advice anyone wants to share!! I can't thank you all enough in advance!!!!

Hi Geoff, first congrats, I'm thrilled you’re saving this beautiful AMP.

OK the first thing I would do is attach a drain hose and pour a gallon or so hot water down the hose in order to fill the pump and lubricate it's seals.

Next take some duct tape and tape the float switch in the lid down. Close the lid and see if you can get it to agitate. I doubt that this is going to work because if it doesn't spin either than there is a problem with the motor or the motor circuit. Do you know if the motor just hums or its completely dead? If it just hums there is a good chance that the pump in seazed and needs some manual intervention first.

As for attaching a garden hose, sure I do it all the time. But go the hardware store and pick up a ¾ garden hose cap to seal off the cold side (run the hose through the hot side) and you will still need a washing machine hose to attach the male end of garden hose to and the other end of the washer hose to the washer valve.

Hi Robert ... thanks for the kudos!! I'm looking forward to this process.

Not sure about the motor, but I will drop the owners an e-mail this afternoon asking what exactly happened when they tried to use it and if they heard the motor; I'll let you know.

I know what type of cap you are talking about and I will probably purchase new inlet hoses, too; just to be sure.

Do you just lay the drain hose down on the cement to let the water run out?

On a Maytag,you have to have the drain hose as high as the back of the washer,or so,or it will drain as fast as it fills.

Concerning the not running,it may be as simple as the belts,or the slides on the motor rusted up from sitting in a damp basement.Either way,it doesn't sound like it's a serious problem. Congrats for rescuing another 'tag!

Kenny ... thanks. I can place the hose in an old laundry tub I have in the garage.

Austin ... are you referring to the holes in the basket? It is a solid tub and I'm not too sure what the holes did. I think the water "dropped" from the tub into an outer chamber and then was pumped out.

Am I thinking about water removal on this machine properly?

If I'm not mistaken, AMP's have a perforated liner which makes it look like a perforated tub.

Wasn't this supposed to help with sand disposal to a degree?

I think the ads used to say ... "a one-way trip for dirt." So, I would suppose the perforations would assist in that process.

BTW ... I just received an e-mail from the previous owner and she indicated that it had been a long time since she had tried to use the machine and she just remembers she couldn't get it to spin out; she wasn't sure of the agitation either.

Wonder how long the water sat in there!! HORRORS!!

That's why it's not a good idea to test a machine by throwing a load in and expecting it to wash. You'd think one would know that and at least see if it fires up first!

Well, at least the water valve worked.

Kenny, I don't think this model has the standard motor glide configuration. Appears to be a whole different animal than the helical drives.

Geoff, first of all its best that the owner not plug it in anymore. The best diagnosis will come from you with a little help from you friends here.

Second of all Austin is correct, the AMP Maytag is a solid basket washer with an inner perforated tub liner. You don't need to worry about raising the hose, just let it down out onto the grass.

At the hardware store just ask them for a cap for a outside garden hose faucet.

The owner said she was "going to get the water out" before she shipped. Oh boy, I wonder how she is going to do that? You can't just lay the hose down ... hmmmm ... hope she doesn't tip the machine upside down; good grief!! Something more I need to worry about. I will tell her, however, to not plug the machine in anymore.
